BMW Motorrad at Motorcycle Live.

News from Vines BMW Bikes of Guildford and South London (Caterham)

BMW Motorrad’s full 2011 line-up to make UK debut at Motorcycle Live
Come and see the world’s most advanced tourers, the new entry-level GS and the future of city commuting on the BMW stand!

The entire range of 2011 BMW Motorrad bikes will be on display at the Carole Nash
Motorcycle Live show, including the K 1600 GT and GTL, the most advanced touring
bikes ever created; the new entry-level, single-cylinder G 650 GS; the updated Boxer
engined R 1200 R and R 1200 R Classic roadsters and the Concept C futuristic
scooter. Carole Nash Motorcycle Live is the UK’s biggest bike show and will be held at
the NEC in Birmingham from 27 November to 05 December.

The new six-cylinder K 1600 GT and K 1600 GTL combine high technology with
BMW’s legendary expertise in creating world-beating touring motorcycles. They
feature the lightest and most compact six-cylinder in-line engine in serial motorcycle
production, along with a host of cutting-edge innovations including Adaptive Headlight,
Dynamic Traction Control and Electronic Suspension Adjustment.

With the new R 1200 R and R 1200 R Classic, BMW Motorrad is continuing its long
tradition of roadster building with two 2011 models powered by the new DOHC Boxer
twin engine. The Classic offers a retro style and features tasteful chrome components,
spoked wheels and subtle design cues. The R 1200 R has a more dynamic and
modern style, offering an aesthetic option for every customer.

The G 650 GS is the newest member of the GS team. The lightweight, single-cylinder
adventure-sports machine also has a relatively low seat height, so it presents an
attractive means of entry to the joys of motorcycles and the fascinating world of BMW
GS bikes.

Also appearing is the new special-edition R 1200 GS Triple Black. This version of
the legendary adventure-sports motorcycle features tank and front wheel covers in
sapphire black, forks and engine in plain black, cross spoke wheels with glossy black
rims and the swingarm, rear frame, and cylinder head covers in metallic asphalt grey.

Not content with showcasing a comprehensive range of new 2011 bikes, BMW
Motorrad will also offer a glimpse of the future with the Concept C. Hendrik von
Kuenheim, BMW Motorrad General Director, has announced that the company will
soon be entering the big scooter market. Immediately recognisable as a member of the
BMW family, with its ‘split face’ and twin-tipped front spoiler very much in the style of
the S 1000 RR, the Concept C’s aggressive sports styling suggests ‘dynamic riding’
possibilities previously unseen in the class.

BMW will also be hosting autograph sessions with racers including Leon Haslam and
Troy Corser on their stand B110 in Hall 2. Elsewhere, the BMW Motorrad Motorsports
World Superbikes team bike be on display on the Silverstone stand (R535) while the
Motorcycle News stand (G412) will be holding a free prize draw to win a BMW S 1000
RR, which won their prestigious ‘Machine of the Year’ award.

This year also marks three decades since the launch of the BMW R 80 G/S, so we will
be featuring a second stand to celebrate 30 Years of the GS in style. A major new part
of our show package will be a display of famous and historic GS motorcycles located
on an adjacent stand (B042).

Visitors to the stand will also be able to explore the adventurous and exciting World of
BMW, which features BMW Off Road Skills, BMW Tours and BMW Rider Training. Our
hot-off-the-press World of BMW 2011 Activity Brochure will be ready to take home.

The 2011 Style Collections are a new and exciting addition to the BMW Motorrad
range of Rider Equipment. As well as the iconic, instantly-recognisable Logo range
which features BMW Motorsports colours, next year sees the introduction of three
limited-edition, one-time-only fashion collections: Heritage, Double R and GS. Based
on BMW Motorrad’s rich history, striking new S 1000 RR supersports bike and the
legendary adventure-sports bikes, these casual wear collections will be on display for
the first time in the UK at Motorcycle Live.

BMW GS Trophy 2010

News from Vines BMW Bikes of Guildford and South London (Caterham)

Victorious Team GB take the 2010 International BMW GS
Trophy title in nail biting, three-way battle

Hard fought eight-day off-road challenge won by a single point!

The 2010 International BMW Motorrad GS Trophy, a mammoth eight-day off-road
adventure running for 2,000km across three South African nations and involving a host
of challenges, tests and trials, has been won by Team GB.

The British team, made up of amateur GS-owning riders Alastair Allan, Mark Kinnard,
and Kevin Hammond, rode BMW F 800 GS adventure-sports bikes across South Africa,
Swaziland and Mozambique. The plucky British riders built up an early lead which
developed into a thrilling three-way battle with the Scandinavian and South African
teams, all the while dodging lions and elephants and tackling some of the most
beautiful, but challenging, terrain in the world.

The gruelling competition, involving ten teams from all over the world, pushed the riders
to their limits. A range of challenges tested their riding skills, endurance and ability to
work together as a team. The competition lasted eight days, one of which was Team
GB member Kevin Hammond’s 50th birthday. The birthday boy was treated to the
toughest day of the whole event which ended with a 30km ride across the deepest
sand in the competition, all in temperatures over 35ºC!

The non-stop GS Trophy schedule mixed long days in the saddle, up to 300km on
gravel roads in a single day, with a range of tricky challenges including steep hillclimbs,
obstacle courses, slow-speed slaloms, river crossings and tractor pulls - the latter of
which came easily to Team GB’s two farmers! And there were no luxury hotels or tales
of indulgence along the way, the teams camped under the African stars at night.

Kevin and the team rose to the challenge with gusto, going on to win the hotly
contested title with a slim one-point lead over second placed Team South Africa! A
combined Scandinavian team took a well-earned third.

Mark Kinnard, 42, from Hertfordshire, was equally pleased, “It was very tight going into
the very last day.  We said on the final night that whatever the outcome, we would be
very happy. Winning is terrific, of course, but it was the experience – the country, the
friendships, the shared highs and lows – that will stay with us long after the glow of
victory will fade.”

Kevin Hammond, 50, from Norfolk, said: “It really was tough! The GS Trophy tested our
skills and pushed us to the limit. It was very hard work and we had some crashes, but
we’d all love to go back and start all over again! Reaching the Indian Ocean when we
finished the desert crossing was fantastic, seeing that incredible blue of the water
together with the first cold beer of the day, it was just incredible.”

Alastair Allan, 42, from Cambridgeshire, said: “What can I say? Job done! It’s been a
fantastic adventure. We all got on like a house on fire and that’s what made it a great
event to take part in. And I think the fact that the team got on so well is the key to our
success. It was an unbelievable test and a true once in a lifetime experience.”

Georg ("Schorsch") Meier

Vines BMW Bikes News
News from the BMW Motorrad Dealers of Guildford and South London (Caterham)

Schorsch Meier at the Tourist Trophy (Senior TT) 1939

Born winner and role model: on the 100th birthday of Georg ("Schorsch") Meier.

“Schorsch”, as he was known in Bavarian, made motor sport history in his time. Born in Mühldorf, he embarked on off-road racing on a BMW R 4 and, among other triumphs, became German Military Champion. In 1937 he was signed on by BMW as a works rider, and crowned his very first season of road racing with the 1938 European Championship. What was arguably his most significant victory followed in 1939, when he became the first non-British rider on a foreign motorcycle to win the Senior TT on the Isle of Man. In doing so, he placed not only himself but the BMW brand firmly at the pinnacle of road racing.

After the war, he took another five German Championships on his pre-war supercharged BMW motorcycle, set up world endurance records and raked in medals in off-road events. Throughout, he remained loyal to the BMW brand – not just on the race track but in his business life as well. In spring of 1948 Meier opened up a motorcycle shop in Munich’s Dachauerstrasse and a year later became a BMW motorcycle dealer, subsequently selling BMW cars as well. At this time he was already one of Germany’s biggest and most successful BMW franchised dealers.

Georg Meier, who died on 19 February 1999, was one of the true sporting greats of his day. He was a popular public figure not only for his sporting successes but also thanks to his exemplary comportment beyond the race track. As such he not only helped to define the sporting image of the BMW brand but also served as an outstanding ambassador of the brand at all times.

A company in its time, 1939: "Senior Tourist Trophy" - Georg Meier wins on his BMW Kompressor

BMW Concept C

Vines BMW Bikes News
News form the BMW Motorrad Dealers in Guildford and South London (Caterham)

BMW Concept C.
The scooter of the future made by BMW Motorrad.

Recent years have seen radical changes in the world of individual mobility, specifically in the conurbations, and the number of registrations has rocketed for virtually all individual transport concepts. However, the space available to traffic has not grown to the same extent, so individual mobility must come to terms with the new circumstances.

Against this background, BMW Motorrad will be expanding its present motorcycle adventure world to include the big scooter. This new product segment will first give rise to two innovative premium scooters with internal combustion engines. The differing characteristics of this concept will appeal to a broad target group. In addition, some thought is being given to a future alternative drive with electric motor.

BMW Motorrad will be combining in these scooters the outstanding handling of the motorcycle with the particular agility and conceptual comfort of the scooter for the maximum experience of dynamic riding – a big scooter made by BMW Motorrad. There are plans to manufacture these future production vehicles at the BMW Motorrad plant in Berlin.

BMW Motorrad is continuing its strategy of strong and sustainable growth and so will be intensifying its traditional work in the enduro, touring, and sport touring fields. Following its successful entry to the super sport segment, BMW Motorrad will now be expanding its range yet again to include a highly promising business line.

This path leads straight to the big scooter segment. These high displacement vehicles with dynamic handling characteristics have gained considerable popularity all over the world. Moreover, they present an interesting alternative to returnees who up to now were undecided about motorcycles after long periods of abstinence.

BMW Concept C. New dimension in the field of big scooters.
New ideas and concepts on the subject of two-wheeled mobility are a decades old tradition at BMW Motorrad. Countless times, concept studies and drafts have been presented that reflect the power of innovation and future orientation of BMW Motorrad.

With its Concept C study, BMW Motorrad is yet again embarking on a new path and demonstrating a fascinating mobility option for the future. Here, C stands for “commuter”. Particularly in view of the traffic development in urban areas, it presents the prospect of an innovative, sporty big scooter for the future premium segment.

As usual at BMW Motorrad, there is more to this study than just an attempt to present a big scooter for the highest demands. Rather, the designers and engineers of BMW Motorrad focused above all on the emotive component in addition to the technical function and quality – and the thrill from the very first moment on.

BMW Concept C. Emotion, dynamic handling, and function in the design.
When unveiling its Concept C at EICMA in Milan, BMW Motorrad will be directing the maximum possible emotion to its interpretation of this subject, which will bear witness to the primary claims of maximum, all round functionality.

Concept C as a vision of the big scooter is immediately recognisable as a member of the BMW Motorrad family. For instance, it also presents the so-called “split face”, a visual tripartite of dynamic response extending from the front silhouette to the front wheel cover and beyond. In the style of highly sporty BMW Motorrad models, such as the S 1000 RR, Concept C also features a twin-tipped front spoiler.

Unlike the L shaped side view presented up to now by big scooters, with their predominantly vertical body lines and colour scheme, Concept C has ventured on a new, much more sporty and dynamic path. The body lines sweeping up to the vehicle’s rear underscore this big scooter’s active riding character. The high rear section emphasises the lightness and agility of Concept C's powerful two-cylinder engine. Sportiness and dynamism are also underscored by the close cut, speeder-style windscreen.

The functional side of this scooter is expressed in stylish design elements, such as the aluminium look of the bash plates with the air intake adopted from the BMW GS.

The black chromium of the suspension and frame parts form a thrilling, dynamic relationship with the aluminium chromium, silver, and blue paintwork of the body parts. In addition, the black satin sections present a high-contrast emphasis on the vehicle’s central area. This highly technical and high-quality elegance is borne further by finely worked details, such as the fuel tank cover reminiscent of aircraft and the short, sporty muffler. The visionary facet of Concept C is presented by the tyres with flanks and treads of blue.

BMW Concept C. Pioneering technology that fuels enthusiasm.
Concept C presents unusual and innovative solutions that offer a wide prospect of what in future can become reality in this segment.

For instance, Concept C features a highly complex monolever mechanism with hollowed-out shaft connected to a suspension strut visible from the outside. In this study, front-wheel control takes the form of an upside down fork.

The stable twin disc brake at the front features two radial brake callipers that also underscore the dynamic sportiness of Concept C. In addition, the single disc brake at the rear and the BMW Motorrad ABS provide the maximum possible safety during braking manoeuvres.

The dynamic and equally comfortable driving force behind Concept C is provided by a new, two-cylinder inline engine in conjunction with CVT (continuously variable transmission). Engine power, torque, and therefore performance will be moving towards the top of the segment.

Light is cast on a more distant point in the future by the LED headlamp integrated into the face panelling. This future vision is also continued by the deliberate absence of conventional rear view mirrors, which will be replaced in Concept C with two video cameras in the rear. These record the area behind the vehicle and transfer the images to two LCD monitors in the cockpit within view of the rider. The road speed, engine speed, and other data appear on a third LCD display integrated at the centre of the cockpit.

BMW Concept C. Perfected rider equipment and stowage space concept.
Concept C also testifies to thoughts and ideas extending beyond the actual vehicle. In line with the BMW Motorrad philosophy, a big scooter realised in the Concept C style will also come with a range of adequate rider equipment. In the best BMW Motorrad tradition, the development of a big scooter will also include a suitable stowage space concept.
