The new BMW R 1200 R & Classic.

The new BMW R 1200 R.
The new BMW R 1200 R Classic.

BMW R 1200 R and BMW R 1200 R Classic – the new dynamic roadsters from BMW Motorrad.

With the new BMW R 1200 R and R 1200 R Classic, BMW Motorrad is continuing its long tradition of roadster building and presents the revised successor models to the successful R 1200 R. Both combine a modern sporty and accentuated classical motorcycle design, once again with considerably greater quality and driving dynamics for even more riding fun.

Generating perceptibly higher torques, the new boxer engine provides an extra boost to temperament. Whereas the boxer in the predecessor model had already provided superior propulsion under all conditions, the new BMW R 1200 R models can deliver more on top. Derived from the BMW HP2 Sport, their new boxer with 1170 cc and DOHC valve gear corresponds to the engines already installed in the BMW R 1200 GS and BMW R 1200 RT.

Thanks to ultra modern technology in conjunction with two different design concepts, the new BMW roadsters are setting discrete emphasises in the segment to a degree greater than before.
Whereas the basic version of the BMW R 1200 R emphasises the sporty all round character with new cast light alloy wheels, the R 1200 R Classic presents wire spoke wheels for a deliberate touch of refined nostalgia.

This demarcation between the two new roadster models is also continued in the colour of the paintwork and other equipment details. For instance, the R 1200 R Classic pays homage to the classic roadsters with metallic sapphire black paintwork in conjunction with a centre stripe in plain alpine white extending over the tank and front wheel cover.

The basic version of the R 1200 R is available in mat metallic smoky grey, metallic light grey, or metallic red apple: three colour schemes representing a dynamic, elegant, and modern interpretation of the roadster.

These three colour variants when combined with wheels and drivetrain in Nürburg silver highlight the sporty, dynamic side of the roadster. The R 1200 R Classic, on the other hand, deliberately goes for a refined contrast and emphasises components like the Telelever, drivetrain, cylinder head covers, frame, and fork with silver. Their classical, refined quality also finds expression in the completely chromium-plated exhaust system and the mirrors with a chromium look, whereas the basic version provides a sporty touch in the form of a rear silencer in brushed stainless steel and black rearview mirrors.
Despite the differences in visual appeal presented by the R 1200 R and R 1200 R Classic, they are nevertheless united in their technology.

For instance, maximised rigidity and strength is provided by the tried and tested, two part main/rear frame, which has a  weight-saving structure of steel tubing is designed with the engine as a load-bearing element for maximum stiffness and rigidity. The front suspension of the new BMW R 1200 R trusts in the BMW Telelever in conjunction with a new fork structure. Its high quality, technical grace and the enlarged diameter of the standpipe (from 35 to 41 mm) contribute decisively to shaping the face of the new R 1200 R. The rear suspension takes the form of the tried and tested single arm with BMW Paralever.

Both the R 1200 R and the R 1200 R Classic can be fitted optionally with electronic suspension adjustment ESA. This serves to vary the spring base and the suspension’s pressure and rebound stages at the rear wheel, and the suspension’s rebound stage at the front wheel – a system that has established itself as the solution for optimised road handling and comfort.
The maximum safety standard is ensured by the established and proven brake system, which can be fitted in the factory with the optional BMW Motorrad integral ABS (in the partially integral version) and automatic stability control ASC.

In its role as a traditional system provider, BMW Motorrad has also developed for the new R 1200 R and R 1200 R Classic extensive ranges of optional equipment and tailored optional accessories for further individualisation.

The following presents an overview of the essential features of the new BMW R 1200 R and BMW R 1200 R Classic:
  • Clear differentiation between the R 1200 R and R 1200 R Classic in the form of characteristic colour concepts and equipment features.
  • New dynamic drive, now with double overhead camshafts in each cylinder.
  • Maximum torque raised to 119 Nm at 6000 rpm, and rated power raised to 81 kW (110 hp) at 7750 rpm.
  • Maximum engine speed now raised from 8000 to 8500 rpm for an even wider utilisable speed range.
  • Perceptible improvements to torque values for even greater roadster pleasure on country roads.
  • Spontaneous response with optimised controllability and clearly improved load-alteration effects.
  • Cylinder-head covers now with two instead of the previous four mounting bolts and a new, dynamic styling.
  • Shorter, sportier rear silencer in brushed (R 1200 R) or chromium-plated
    (R 1200 R Classic) stainless steel.
  • Electronically controlled exhaust flap for a superior powerful sound.
  • Cast light alloy wheels (R 1200 R).
  • Wire spoke wheels with light alloy flat collar rims (R 1200 R Classic).
  • ESA (electronic suspension adjustment) (optional factory fit).
  • BMW Motorrad integral ABS in the partially integral version (optional factory fit).
  • Automatic stability control ASC (optional factory fit).
  • Redesigned cockpit with two round analogue instruments.
  • New hydraulic reservoirs with a smoked glass look.
  • Extensive range of optional equipment and tailored accessories at the familiarly high BMW standards.

BMW in record sales territory.

Customers power BMW Motorrad into record sales territory
BMW Motorrad bike registrations hit all-time high in 2010

For the fourth year in succession, more customers than ever before have chosen BMW
Motorrad. With a record 6,703 new bike registrations in 2010, BMW’s award-winning
range of motorcycles is leading the industry, with sales up 12.2% on 2009.

Alongside growing sales in BMW’s traditionally core areas of Adventure Sports and
Touring motorcycles, the now-iconic S 1000 RR supersports bike has brought an
entirely new customer demographic into the BMW Motorrad brand. The success of the
S 1000 RR, both in showrooms and on the race track, has been matched by domestic
and international awards and acclaim, including MCN’s ‘Machine of the Year’ and the
‘International Masterbike’ title.

The range of BMW Rider & Motorcycle Equipment has expanded and grown to provide
clothing and accessories suitable for the entire spectrum of BMW Motorrad bikes and
World of BMW activities. The BMW dealer network is also constantly evolving to
further improve the customer experience. Allan Jefferies BMW and Balderston BMW,
two of BMW Motorrad’s long-standing dealers, have moved into brand new, custom-
designed buildings, looking to push customer service even further.

BMW’s strong showing in the highly-respected annual ‘Rider Power’ survey has
reflected the high levels of customer satisfaction delivered by BMW Motorrad’s
motorcycles, clothing and dealer network. Five of the top ten bikes - including the
winning K 1300 S - are BMWs and BMW Motorrad won the overall ‘Best Brand’ award
in 2010, which combines satisfaction across the board, reliability and dealer
performance.

The growth in showroom sales has been matched by a sensational debut season for
the S 1000 RR. Title victories in the National Superstock 1000 and BSB-EVO
Championships, and a thrilling supercar v superbike race on globally-viewed BBC
series ‘Top Gear’ have helped propel the S 1000 RR to iconic status, while the
unstoppable R 1200 GS’s appearance on motoring show ‘Fifth Gear’ has further
fuelled the GS legend.

In an overall motorcycle market that fell 15.9% in 2010, BMW Motorrad was the only
volume motorcycle manufacturer to show double-digit growth in the UK, with sales up
12.2%.

Sales highlights:
2010 was BMW Motorrad’s most successful year ever in the UK - with 6,703
bikes registered.
BMW Motorrad sales rose 12.2% in 2010, in a market that saw motorcycle
registrations drop by 15.9% during the same period.
2010 was the fourth year in a row that BMW Motorrad UK has achieved record-
breaking sales.
BMW Motorrad’s motorcycle market share has almost doubled in just three
years – rising from 5.9% in 2007 to 10.2% in 2010.
Sales of the R 1200 GS and R 1200 GS Adventure combined make the R 1200
GS the best-selling motorcycle in the UK, with 2,420 bikes sold – an increase of
13.3% from 2009.
Overall, BMW Motorrad was the fifth best–selling motorcycle brand in the UK -
up from sixth in 2009.
In the over 750cc sector, BMW Motorrad was market leader with 21% market
share - up from 16.2% in 2009.
In the over 125cc category BMW was the third most popular bike marque, just
24 units behind second place.

BMW Motorrad dominates the Adventure Sport category with 34% market
share - the R 1200 GS and Adventure account for 26%.
The R 1200 RT and K 1300 GT were the two best-selling bikes in the Touring
category with 37.5% market share. The R 1200 RT alone accounted for 27.5%
of all touring bikes sold in 2010.
The S 1000 RR was the second best-selling supersports bike (over 125cc).
In the UK, four of the top six best-selling bikes over 125cc were BMWs.

Adrian Roderick, General Manager of BMW Motorrad UK, said: “2010 was another
fantastic year for BMW Motorrad. In a motorcycle market that is sadly continuing to
decline we have increased our sales and share of the market. Not only have we
continued to lead the sectors that are core to the BMW brand, such as Touring and
Adventure Sport, but we have also attracted new customers to Motorrad with the
introduction of pioneering products, such as the now iconic S 1000 RR.

“It is not just the S 1000 RR that has been responsible for our success in 2010. We
also continued to show growth in our traditional core markets of Adventure Sport and
Touring. The uprated boxer engine powered the 2010 R 1200 GS, Adventure and R
1200 RT to the top of their categories, with sales of each model showing significant
growth on 2009. Our dealer network should also take great credit for the industry-
leading customer service they continue to provide.

“Looking forward, 2011 will be another exciting year for BMW Motorrad. On 19 March
we will be launching four new models like the revolutionary six-cylinder K 1600 GT and
K 1600 GTL. BMW Motorrad will continue to bring innovation and unparalleled
technology to the motorcycle market in 2011, which we are confident will bring
continued sales success.”

BMW Motorrad signs Ian Lowry

News from Vines BMW Bikes of Guildford and South London (Caterham).

Buildbase BMW Motorrad signs Ian Lowry to race in 2011 MCE British Superbike Championship

Northern Irish racer completes star four-rider team

Buildbase BMW Motorrad is pleased to announce that Ian Lowry has joined the team for 2011 and will be contesting the MCE British Superbike Championship alongside fellow Ulsterman and teammate John Laverty.

The 24-year-old, from Moira in Northern Ireland, completes Buildbase BMW Motorrad’s four-rider team. He joins Durham-based Barry Burrell, who will be racing in the Mirror.co.uk BSB-EVO class for the first time, and Nottinghamshire man Richard Cooper, who will once again be competing in the the Metzeler National Superstock 1000 championship onboard a BMW S 1000 RR.

Former chef Lowry has previously finished 2nd and 3rd in the highly competitive British Supersport 600 Championship, run in the World Supersport Championship, made his World Superbike debut in 2010 at the Nurburgring round and finished 5th in the British Superbike Championship in 2009.

Ian Lowry said: “I’m pretty excited to be honest. I met with Stuart Hicken of Hawk Racing over in Ireland but he didn’t tell me what he was working on. We had a meeting at the Motorcycle Live show, where the team made its debut, and we both said we wanted to race together.

“I heard that he was joining forces with BMW Motorrad and I was keen to get involved. The bikes have been very competitive – they dominated both the Superstock and BSB-EVO championships last year – so it’s a brilliant opportunity for me. I think the British tracks really suit the S 1000 RR’s chassis and setup, so it’s just a matter of getting a few miles under our belts and getting ready for the year’s racing. We’re hoping to get out and do some testing in January, if the weather plays ball!”

Stuart Hicken, Buildbase BMW Motorrad Team Principal, said: “I’ve watched Ian’s progress with interest for three years now, especially in WSBK towards the end of 2010. He rode very well – and didn’t crash a lot – which is a good sign!

“I ran into him again at the Sunflower Trophy meeting in Ireland at the end of 2010 where he beat John Laverty. I think there will be a healthy rivalry. I can see that John and Ian will push each other to the limit – and not too many times over it, I hope! I’m looking forward to a great season – and I think they can both help Barry on the EVO bike. Their knowledge will be invaluable to our BSB-EVO challenge too.”

Ian Lowry joins Buildbase BMW to race in MCE British Superbikes

BMW S 1000RR on BBC Top Gear.

News from Vines BMW Bikes of Guildford and South London (Caterham).

BMW S 1000 RR takes on supercar in this Sunday’s episode of Top Gear on BBC 2

New series kicks off with a bike v car race, featuring BSB-EVO Champion Steve Brogan.

A BMW S 1000 RR, the double championship-winning supersports bike, features in a
high-octane superbike vs supercar race on this week’s episode of the hugely popular
BBC Top Gear show.

Steve Brogan, the 2010 Mirror.co.uk BSB-EVO champion, will be racing the 999cc,
193bhp stock road bike around the legendary Top Gear test track. He’s up against a
£150,000 Ariel Atom V8 – a 475bhp, 550kg supercar powered by two 1300cc
motorcycle engines which have been bored out and turned into a V8.

Brogan, who dominated the BSB-EVO class on a race spec BMW, takes on the
supercar which costs more then ten times as much as the stock BMW S 1000 RR.

In a neck-and-neck race around the famous circuit, viewers of Sunday night’s show will
get to see whether the bike or car, at the hands of a mystery driver, crosses the finishing
line first!

Motorcycle News, the UK’s biggest motorcycle publication, was on hand to witness the
race and the Wednesday 19 January issue contains a sneak preview. Anyone wanting
to know the result will have to tune into the show on BBC2 on Sunday 23 January at
8pm.

Steve Brogan said: “I had a lot of fun filming with Top Gear. I had a few laps in a car then
it was out on the stock S 1000 RR. We got some good weather when we filmed it in
October and the track was nice and dry so I could push hard. I turned the traction
control off as I wanted to use some wheelspin in the corners.

“The car was very quick – and had more than double the horsepower of the bike. But
the power to weight ratio was in my favour, so it was a fair race. I rode hard, it was very
close! You’ll have to watch to see who came out on top though.”
