Buildbase BMW Motorrad finish on the podium and in the points at Croft

A wet and windy weekend at Croft Circuit saw local rider Barry Burrell take third place in a BSB-EVO race and the Buildbase BMW Motorrad team take their first British Superbike championship points. Superstock 1000 rider Richard Cooper secured fourth place in the championship standings with a top five finish.

The first British Superbike and BSB-EVO fixture of the day was lashed with rain, leading to difficult tyre choices for the teams. John Laverty, having worked on a new setup overnight with the team, brought his BMW S 1000 RR home in lucky 13th place to take Buildbase BMW Motorrad's first Superbike points of the season. Fellow BSB rider Ian Lowry crossed the line right behind him, but was given a ten-second penalty for an overtake as the yellow flag was lifted following a crash earlier in the race. Despite this time penalty, he took 18th position. BSB-EVO rider Barry Burrell retired on lap nine with tyre issues.

The second race saw John Laverty start from the fourth row and Ian Lowry the fifth. Barry Burrell took third place in the BSB-EVO class and 17th overall and was cheered by the crowds at his local race when he collected his trophy from the podium. Team-mate Ian Lowry brought his S 1000 RR home in 14th place to secure his first points of the season. John Laverty, having been slowed by the safety car after race one winner Jon Kirkham and Michael Laverty crashed out of the first lap, brought his bike home in 21st place.

Richard Cooper, Buildbase BMW Motorrad's Superstock 1000 rider, qualified on the front row for the race. Richard was caught up in the rush for the first corner, running in nineth position by the end of the first lap. However, he worked his way back up through the pack and finished in fifth position, securing fourth place in the championship standings.

Stuart Hicken, team principal, said: "This feels like the first weekend when every one of my riders has been racing, rather than developing. We've had our first points of the season in British Superbikes for both Ian Lowry and John Laverty, Richard Cooper's secured fourth in the Superstock 1000 championship and Barry Burrell took the second BSB-EVO podium of the season - at his home race. I'm very pleased with today's results, which show we're on track to be a real contender by the fifth round - which was always my prediction. With new gearboxes and engine modifications to get more power from the Superbike engines, I'm very much looking forward to Thruxton and the upcoming races."
