First podium finish of 2011.

News from Vines BMW BIkes of Guildford and Caterham.

First podium finish of 2011 for Buildbase BMW Motorrad.

Barry Burrell took Buildbase BMW Motorrad's first podium place of the year in the day's first BSB-EVO race. Richard Cooper improved on his qualifying position to take fourth in the Superstock 1000 race. Ian Lowry continued the development of his bike with the assistance of suspension expert Peter Goddard and took two solid 18th places in the British Superbike Championship. All three were cheered on by fellow BSB rider John Laverty, currently resting his injured finger ahead of his return to racing at the next round.

The best result of the day was from Barry Burrell who was running in fifth position in the EVO class when riders Glen Richards and Simon Andrews crashed out of the race ahead of him. Barry kept up the pace and held off a late challenge from James Hillier to take his and the team's first podium finish of the season by placing third. Also out on the track was fellow BMW S 1000 RR riding teammate Ian Lowry, who had a tough race after running straight on at Knickerbrook. However, he rejoined the fray and fought his way back up to 18th.

In the second race, Barry's starting position of third EVO bike gave him a good start, but a big crash involving Josh Brookes saw his pace slowed during the yellow flag and subsequent time behind the pace car. Once the race got underway, he pushed on but finished as seventh EVO rider past the chequered flag. Ian Lowry finished 18th again. Having made progress with his bike setup, Lowry was moving through the pack but was slowed by the yellow flags.

Barry Burrell said: "I was a bit surprised but very pleased by the result. It's not the way I wanted to get my first EVO podium but I'll take it! We were nowhere all weekend but we tried new gearing, of all things, just before the race and everything just came together and it felt like a whole new bike. The second race was pretty good too, I was in fourth place but I pushed a little too hard and I think I cracked the back wheel coming over a kerb. I'm feeling very, very confident about the next races at Croft, my local circuit."

In the final race of the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, Richard Cooper battled at the front of the Superstock 1000 pack, where a brake issue forced him to re-adjust his lever on the fly which knocked him back to seventh. However, Richard upped his pace and brought his BMW S 1000 RR home to a hard fought fourth position by the chequered flag.

Stuart Hicken, team principal, said: "We started this weekend rather disappointed as John Laverty was ruled out of racing with a quite severe finger injury. But things definitely have come together, we've made great strides forward. We've had Peter Goddard assisting with setup and he found something that worked for Barry and got him our first podium of the season. Richard just missed out on a podium finish due to a brake problem but we're very happy with fourth. Ian continued improving his setup and I'm confident that by the fifth meeting of the year, we'll be mixing it in the top ten."

The team will next be taking to the track at Croft on 13-15 May.
