The new BMW S 1000 RR.

Scarcely two years after the launch in 2009, BMW Motorrad is now presenting the revised model of this successful supersports bike, now with many optimised details. The primary objectives were even greater riding precision and agility, a punchier power buildup, and a more sensitive response. The revised model of the S 1000 RR has incorporated quite a few feedback reports from national super stock races.

Like its predecessor, the new RR knows no compromise, providing the highest level of sporting character and riding dynamics. The convincing features of the new S 1000 RR are its improved handling with absolute riding stability, supreme engine performance with perfect everyday practicality, and a resounding dynamic performance. The highest level of active safety is safeguarded by the most advanced brake system today on the market, the BMW Motorrad Race ABS. When accelerating, the rider is supported by the Dynamic Traction Control system DTC. Both of these systems have been optimised for the perfect interaction.

There have been no changes to the superior engine power of 142 kW (193 hp) with a weight of only 204 kilograms including 90% fuel (206.5 weight with Race ABS).

Concept with optimised riding dynamics.

One of the primary objectives pursued for the revised S 1000 RR model was to improve ridability by boosting thrust and enhancing the linearity and harmoniousness of the power and torque curves. The reconfigured throttle improves overall response.

The new, optimised design raises response sensitivity, tightens the twistgrip angle, and reduces the twisting force.

Suspension with improved handling and feedback.

The modifications to the new RR suspension have been instrumental in boosting its riding dynamics. For instance, the upside down fork and the spring strut feature a new internal structure, providing an even wider range of damping forces from comfort to performance.

Moreover, the suspension geometry has been modified with new values for the steering head angle, offset, position of the swing arm pivot, fork projection, and spring strut length to yield even better handling, steering accuracy, and feedback for the new S 1000 RR. This has required modifications to the main frame that also included enlarging the cross sectional area of the intake air guide through the steering head for greater air flow efficiency. This package of suspension optimisations is rounded off by an adjustable mechanical steering damper.

Instrument cluster with new functions.

The engine speed display has been redesigned for better readability. In addition, the display can now be dimmed and provides more functions. For instance, the lap timer can now present “Best lap in progress”, and if required, “Speedwarning” can inform the rider when he exceeds a particular speed.

Refined design and new colours.

The new S 1000 RR not only benefits from the advanced developments for the engine, suspension, and cockpit. It has also gained yet another step ahead in terms of design. The tail section now presents a considerably leaner look. There have been some discrete changes to the asymmetrical side panels, and the centre airbox cover now sports side aperture grilles. On the top part of the panels, a new, telling identifying feature takes the form of two winglets that enhance the aerodynamic qualities.

In the most sporting colour combination of Racing red and Alpine white, the RR exudes power and speed even when it is stationary, whereas plain Bluefire lends it a decidedly extravagant look.
Sporty dynamics is conveyed by Sapphire black metallic, and in BMW Motorrad Motorsport colours, the new S 1000 RR testifies to its direct relationship with BMW Motorrad Motorsport. The distinctive RR logo has been slightly modified.

Additional visual accents take the form of wheels painted in glossy black and the red spring in the central strut. The matching swing arm either presents an anodised coating or is kept in black.
Also the ergonomics has been improved in the form of new heel plates for the rider. The stabilisers on the passenger footrests have now been designed for a leaner look.

Extended range of optional extra and special equipment.

For individualising the new S 1000 RR, BMW Motorrad is expanding its range of optional extras and special equipment ex works with a number of attractive features. Riders with a particularly sporty bent can now equip their RR with an HP titanium exhaust system (with or without ABE) or the HP race data logger. Also the heated grips offering two levels and fitted as optional extra can take the bite out of the early morning run on the racetrack or longer rides in cold weather.

The new features at a glance:
  • Optimised torque curve for improved ridability.
  • Expansion from two to three performance curves (one each for Rain and Sport modes and an additional one for Race and Slick modes); Rain mode now 120 kW (163 hp).
  • Reconfigured throttle for enhanced response (particularly gentle and sensitive acceleration in Rain mode, and immediately direct and spontaneous response in Sport, Race, and Slick modes).
  •  Reduced twisting force and tighter twistgrip angle.
  •  Smaller secondary ratio for boosted thrust.
  • Refined tuning between Race ABS and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC).
  • Enlarged cross sectional area of the intake air guide through the steering head for greater air flow efficiency.
  • Better handling, steering accuracy, and feedback.
  • Revised spring elements for an even wider range of damping forces.
  • Suspension geometry modified with new values for the steering head angle, offset, position of the swing arm pivot, fork projection, and spring strut length.
  • New mechanical steering damper adjustable over ten levels.
  • Forged and milled fork bridge in a new design and with a smaller offset.
  • Revised design with a leaner tail section, redesigned side panels, centre airbox cover with side aperture grilles, and winglets.
  • For new colour variants: plain Racing Red with Alpine white, Bluefire, Sapphire black metallic, BMW Motorrad Motorsport colours.
  • Revised RR logo.
  • w heel plates and leaner stabilisers on the passenger footrests.
  • Redesigned LCD engine speed display for better readability and with five dimming levels.
  • Instrument cluster with the new functions “Best lap in progress” and “Speedwarning”; deactivation of “Lamp” fault message when headlamp or number plate carrier removed.
  • Catalytic converters relocated, so no heat shield necessary.
  • Expansion to the optional extras and special equipment ex works.

Haslam secures fifth place

Haslam secures fifth place in 2011 WSBK championship!

2011 Superbike World Championship race report from Portimao, Portugal

BMW Motorrad Motorsport’s Leon Haslam safely secured a top-five finish in the 2011 Superbike World Championship after two hard-fought races at Portimao circuit in Portugal today.

In race one, Leon Haslam made a decent start from the third row of the grid, battling in the early stages with Max Biaggi and Tom Sykes. The tough Brit actually fought his way up to sixth place in the early stages, but with six riders closely vying for track position around him, there was pressure and constant challenges from many racers, especially Noriyuki Haga and Maxime Berger.

With tyre life an issue at the physically demanding Algarve circuit, Haslam eventually brought home his S 1000 RR in ninth place, with BMW Motorrad Italia’s Ayrton Badovini in 13th, just in front of Troy Corser in 14th. The winner of race one was new world champion Carlos Checa, who also celebrated his 20th WSBK victory.

In race two – the final race of the year – Leon was pushed wide on the first turn and was left with a lot of work to do from the back of the pack. Ayrton Badovini made a decent start into the top 10 and fought his way past Haga and Camier in the first two laps to move up into the top seven. Having won here last year in the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup race, Ayrton looked comfortable on his RR as he moved into the top six on lap 3.

With Camier, Tom Sykes and Max Biaggi mounting a fight-back, Badovini was forced to concede a place to Camier on lap 6 as he was out-braked at the end of the start-finish straight. Leon Haslam, meanwhile, was setting his fastest lap of the race on his RR, but all the way back in 16th place.

Two laps later, last year’s double race winner Max Biaggi out-dragged Badovini on the start-finish straight, leaving the talented Italian WSBK rookie to consolidate his top 10 placing as the race neared its conclusion. He eventually finished in a respectable ninth place, securing tenth in the overall standings, while Leon salvaged a single point by finishing in 15th. Troy Corser, competing in his 377th and final WSBK race, finished just behind Leon. The final race of the year was won by Marco Melandri, who will be lining up alongside Leon Haslam for BMW Motorrad Motorsport next year.

Leon Haslam: “We knew that it is going to be a tough weekend and as we had expected, we were struggling with the bike in race one. From the first lap on we had to fight and it was a long, hard race. It was just about bringing it home and trying to get as many points as possible. We were in the top 10, so we improved from where we qualified. At the start of the second race I was struggling so much that I ran off the track. That put me way back. Throughout the race the consistency was a little bit better, but I lost the front quite often and the rear tyre had blistered up. Those were too many issues to get a good result with. But we already knew that we would struggle this weekend. Now I am looking forward to the future and to the 2012 season which starts on Tuesday with our test here.”

Troy Corser: “I am a little disappointed about the results. That was not really how I wanted to finish my racing career, as we struggled the whole weekend. We were able to improve the bike by changing some settings but we still did not have enough grip and lost a lot of time. I just rode as hard as I could with what I had and gave my best. It was a shame because we made very good steps throughout the year and I was hoping to transfer that here. The team and I tried everything, but that was not enough. I was not the only one to struggle with grip, as a lot of guys were sliding around, so it was just a matter of bringing it home without a crash. All in all I have to say that I enjoyed every bit of it though – it was frustrating at times, but there have been some good times as well.”

Bernhard Gobmeier (BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director): “Due to Troy’s last start in the Superbike World Championship this was an historic day. Of course we would have hoped for a better result for him but this weekend was difficult from the beginning. In the early stages of race one it went quite well for us but then we experienced severe issues with grip and tyres. Now we are looking forward to the new season and beginning our preparations with full swing, starting with our test on Tuesday.”

Superstock 1000 title

Buildbase BMW Motorrad wrap up 2011 season with Superstock 1000 title and third in BSB-EVO.

Richard Cooper was presented with the 2011 Metzeler National Superstock 1000 Championship trophy today in front of the Brands Hatch crowds at the final race weekend of the year. BSB-EVO rider Barry Burrell secured third place in the series with two podium finishes at an incident-heavy Brands Hatch.

Cooper secured the Superstock 1000 title two weeks ago at Silverstone where he extended his lead to 46.5 points - guaranteeing him the championship whatever the outcome of the final race. However, today's race was red-flagged after just two laps due to several crashes.

Due to a lack of time, and an already delayed schedule due to a red-flagged Superstock 600 event, race control made the decision to cancel the race. The series organisers applied the scores as they stood after Silverstone, subsequently declaring Cooper the 2011 title.

Cooper's championship victory is his first - and the second consecutive Metzeler National Superstock 1000 title for BMW Motorrad. BMW S 1000 RR rider Luke Quigley finished third in the highly competitive championship.

Richard Cooper said: "Well it's very frustrating for me and the team not to be able to race today, I had hoped to give them another great finish and end the year on a high. In fact we almost did the opposite! I had a crash very early on, before the race was red flagged. But I'm unhurt and I'm still the 2011 Superstock 1000 Champion! I can't thank the team, the supporters, BMW Motorrad and my family and friends enough for helping me take my first title. Thank you all."

Barry Burrell, on the team’s BSB-EVO bike, delivered an incredible second place finish in the final BSB-EVO race of the year and secured third place in the series. An incident in the day’s first BSB-EVO race forced Burrell to crash out after a rider came off immediately in front of him. As a result he started towards the back of the grid. However Barry fought back with a stunning ride which saw him take his second podium finish of the weekend and finish in the top three in the championship standings.

Barry Burrell said: "I'm delighted to have finished the final weekend of the year with two podiums. The crash in the second race was unfortunate, but unavoidable. The rider in front came off and left me nowhere to go. It's a shame as it's the first race all year I've not finished, but the two podiums and the third place in the BSB-EVO series more than make up for it!"

Stuart Hicken, team principal, said: "Well it's been a tough weekend and an equally tough year. But we've taken the Superstock 1000 title, taken third place in the BSB-EVO series and a very good number of race wins, podium finishes and lap records along the way. Our team have worked hard and I'm very proud of them. And I'm very excited about what 2012 will have in store for us."

Brands Hatch Pole Position

Brands Hatch opens with a pole position and a podium finish for Buildbase BMW Motorrad.

2011 Metzeler National Superstock 1000 Champion Richard Cooper has qualified in pole position for the final round of the season at Brands Hatch. In addition, Richard ran the team’s British Superbike S 1000 RR in the Q1 session, running in the top 20 before a technical fault meant he had to retire.

Barry Burrell, the team’s BSB-EVO rider, took a third place in the first of the weekend’s three EVO races, which sees him consolidating his third place in the highly competitive series.

Richard Cooper said: “It’s been a busy weekend, but we’ve got the pole position for the final race, which is fantastic. Hopefully we can end the year with a great result tomorrow. Things were looking good on the BSB bike, but a technical issue in Q1 meant I had to retire. We’ve decided to concentrate on the Superstock race tomorrow, so I won’t be running in BSB.”

Stuart Hicken, team principal, said: “It’s been a difficult week but we’ve come through. Following the theft of most of the team’s tools and spare parts, and two of our race bikes which were thankfully spotted and recovered, the team have been working flat out to get us in a position to race. Unfortunately, our lack of resources means we won’t be able to get the BSB bike ready to race tomorrow.

“However both Richard and Barry have both done very well today. Barry fought back from a bad start to take yet another podium. And Richard’s pole position puts him in the best possible place to deliver another great race and, hopefully, end the season on a high.”

Tomorrow’s racing will be broadcast live on British Eurosport 2 from 12:30pm.

Richard Cooper

2011 Superstock 1000 Champion Richard Cooper to ride Buildbase BMW Motorrad’s BSB bike at Brands.

Richard Cooper, who wrapped up the 2011 Metzeler National Superstock 1000 Championship at Silverstone two weeks ago, will be competing in both the Superstock 1000 and British Superbike races at this weekend's season finale at Brands Hatch.

The Nottinghamshire rider holds an unassailable 46.5-point lead in the highly competitive production-based series, enough to secure his first title victory - and the second consecutive Superstock 1000 title for BMW Motorrad's S 1000 RR. Cooper will be riding both his Superstock 1000 S 1000 RR and the team's second BSB-spec bike.

Celebrations of the victory were cut short, however, as the Buildbase BMW Motorrad team's compound was broken into on the evening after the race, with thieves stealing a support van, Richard's Superstock machine, a BSB-spec S 1000 RR and tens of thousands of pounds of tools and race parts. However, the two race bikes have been recovered intact - spotted hidden in a road-side field by an eagle-eyed BMW-riding member of the public

Stuart Hicken, team principal, said: "First of all, I have to thank Martin Quigley for discovering our missing bikes. His vigilance means we're able to race at the final round of the season and allow Richard to hopefully finish his year in style. Richard's hard work and consistency this year will be rewarded with the chance to compete in British Superbikes, and Martin and his wife will be the welcome guests of the team at the race.

"Both Richard and Barry Burrell spent the weekend racing at the Stars of Darley Moor event where they finished ahead of John McGuinness, Luke Stapleford, Keith Amor and Ian Lougher. Richard won both races on the BSB-spec bike he'll be running this weekend, providing some very setup time and on-track experience. Barry finished second in both races on his EVO-spec machine. In addition, both Richard and Barry broke the lap record and overall race record several times, with Richard eventually setting the fastest lap time of the event.

"We're delighted to be able to compete in the final round and, despite losing much of our equipment and spares to the thieves, thanks to the help and support of our friends in the paddock and the motorcycle industry, Mr Quigley, and the very hard work of the team, we'll be able to finish the season on a high. With Richard Cooper racing in both Superstock and BSB, Barry Burrell aiming for a top-three finish in the BSB-EVO series and Lee Jackson riding our second BSB bike, it's going to be another busy, but hopefully successful, weekend's racing."

Qualifying and the first of the weekend's BSB/BSB-EVO races will be show live on Saturday on British Eurosport 2.

The new BMW G 650 GS Sertão.

BMW G 650 GS Sertão – the sporty BMW single cylinder enduro for offroad and everyday.
With its new BMW G 650 GS Sertão, BMW Motorrad has added a new, sporting chapter to the history of single cylinders in the BMW GS family. Whereas the G 650 GS thrilled riders with its lean, wiry offroad stature, the G 650 GS Sertão promises even more sporting characteristics, even greater offroad capabilities, and an even stronger desire for adventure.

And all of this without any sacrifice to the established virtues of a BMW single cylinder endure such as everyday practicality, appealing price-performance ratio, and playful riding properties.

Chassis for greater offroad practicality, optimised touring properties, and dynamic design.

On the technical side, the new G 650 GS Sertão uses the established liquid cooled, high-torque single cylinder engine of the G 650 GS with two overhead camshafts, fuel injection, and double ignition. Its 652 cc displacement delivers 35 kW (48 hp) at 6500 rpm and a max torque of 60 Nm at 5000 rpm. Options include output reduction to 25 kW (34 hp) at 6500 rpm and 47 Nm torque at 4500 rpm.

Whereas the G 650 GS chassis was developed primarily for country roads and light offroad use, the Sertão presents far greater offroad practicality in the form of longer spring travels and tighter tuning. In addition, it is fitted with wire spoke wheels.

Also the new colour concept underscores the dynamic character of the single cylinder enduro.

The essential features of the new BMW G 650 GS Sertão at a glance:
  • High-torque and low-consumption single cylinder engine with 652 cc displacement. Max torque of 60 Nm at 5000 rpm and max output of 35 kW (48 hp) at 6500 rpm. Output reduction to 25 kW (34 hp) available.
  • Offroad chassis concept with long spring travels (front/rear 210 mm).
  • Wire spoke wheels with light alloy rims. Wheel sizes 21“ front and 17“ rear.
  • Dynamic colour concept in Aura White / Arroyo Blue with Sertão lettering and seat in black/grey.
  • Luggage carrier in black.
  • Extended top front wheel cover.
  • Two seat heights: 860 mm (standard) and 900 mm (special accessory).
  • High windscreen.
  • Hand protectors.
  • Engine guard of aluminium.
  • Disengageable BMW Motorrad ABS (option ex works).
  • Extensive range of special accessories.

Haslam back on the podium!

2011 Superbike World Championship race report from Magny-Cours, France

BMW Motorrad Motorsport’s Leon Haslam equalled his best result on the BMW S 1000 RR today, when he was rewarded with a podium finish at Magny-Cours after a hard-fought first race. He followed this up with a fourth place in race two, rounding off an excellent weekend in France for the factory BMW team.

Having qualified seventh on the grid, Haslam made a decent start up to fifth place, but an early mistake relegated him down to ninth. His fightback saw him pass Noriyuki Haga on lap two, Jonathan Rea on lap three, Marco Melandri on lap four and then Tom Sykes several laps later.

On lap 10, Haslam caught and passed Sylvain Guintoli and then targeted Leon Camier, who he passed soon after to move into a podium position. Despite challenges from Camier, it was Melandri – who has just signed to ride for the BMW Motorrad Motorsport team for 2012 – who was the danger man. As Haslam closed down second-placed Eugene Laverty and out-braked him on lap 20, he ran wide, which allowed Melandri to slip through into second place. Haslam then had to regroup from back in fourth place, close down Laverty again and try to pass him, which he did successfully on the penultimate lap to move back into a podium position.

The race was won by Carlos Checa, who secured the 2011 Superbike World Championship title in doing so. Haslam’s third place finish equals his best result of the season so far. Troy Corser finished race one in ninth, after starting 16th on the grid.

Race two saw a decent start by Haslam, who held his grid position, while Troy Corser made a great start from row four and was up into 10th by the end of lap one. With Marco Melandri and Sylvain Guintoli for company, Haslam knew he had his work cut out, but he dug deep and set after the pack of six riders in front of him, bringing his two rivals along with him. As Melandri slipped past on lap four, Haslam followed him, the pair chasing down and passing Haga to move up the rankings.

When Jonathan Rea retired from second place on lap 14 with a technical problem, this promoted Haslam up to fifth. He continued his pursuit of Leon Camier, who he passed with just six laps remaining and set off after Melandri and a possible second podium finish of the day. In the end, time was against him and he finished in fourth place. A race-long battle between Troy Corser and Ayrton Badovini ended with Badovini the victor in eighth place on the BMW Motorrad Italia RR, just in front of Corser who was competing in his 375th WSBK race.

New WSBK Champion Carlos Checa ‘did the double’, winning race two and celebrating his 14th race victory of the year. With Haslam and Corser both achieving good results today in Magny-Cours, their total points haul of 43 made it the most successful weekend of the year so far for BMW Motorrad Motorsport.

Leon Haslam: “For sure we have to be happy with two strong results like we had today, but there is still room for improvement. I am happy with the weekend on a whole but we had a few issues in race two with the hotter conditions which prevented us from getting another podium finish. Still, we all understand the areas where we need to improve and we will go away from here and focus on putting everything right in time for Portimao.”

Troy Corser: “On the whole I am little disappointed. We have been strong and consistent all weekend and I was hoping for better results in all honesty. I have been happy with the RR throughout practice and the set-up seemed good for the races, but we really struggled for grip in the latter stages of both races. Two top 10 finishes on paper is not so bad, but with the pace we have shown we all expected a little bit more. Still we have some good information to work from going into Portimao in two weeks time.”

Bernhard Gobmeier: “Firstly, we must congratulate Carlos Checa for winning the world championship. With his commitment and his team he really deserved this success. Our positive results have been a nice reward and real payback for our hard work over the last weeks and months. The positions were justified but we are still not exactly where we want to be. Still we have proved that we can do the times to run at the front. We still have to work on some details so we can continue the consistent level of progression.”
