Tough Weekend.

A tough weekend for BMW Motorrad Motorsport!

2011 Superbike World Championship race report from Miller Motorsports Park, USA

Today’s World Superbike round from Miller Motorsports Park in the USA won’t be fondly remembered by the BMW Motorrad Motorsport team as despite big efforts, things didn’t go according to plan for both Troy Corser and Leon Haslam, who struggled to achieve the results they had hoped for, with Haslam’s eighth place in race one ending up as the team’s best finish of the weekend.

Things had initially looked much more positive and expectations were high when Troy Corser made a fantastic start to race one from sixth on the grid and stormed into the lead, which he defended with some aggressive riding for the first six laps. However, from this point on he began to lose grip and was forced to concede position after position, lap after lap, eventually finishing in 13th place, and just in the points.

From 12th on the grid for race one, team-mate Leon Haslam had bravely fought his way up to sixth place by the latter stages, but with just three laps remaining he lost track position to fellow BMW S 1000 RR rider Ayrton Badovini and also allowed Tom Sykes to slip through, eventually finishing in eighth place.

Race two was one to forget for all the RR riders. First of all, BMW Motorrad Italia’s James Toseland was unable to start due to the pain from his wrist injury. Then, Troy Corser crashed on lap three while pushing hard, leaving Leon Haslam and Ayrton Badovini as the sole BMW riders in the race. It was Badovini who was the more successful of the two, passing Tom Sykes and Jonathan Rea to secure ninth place. Haslam’s difficult weekend continued as he fought hard but was just unable to get his RR working around the Miller circuit, eventually finishing in 13th place.

There was no such drama at the front for Carlos Checa, who took his second victory of the day and increased his championship lead to 61 points over his nearest rival.

Leon Haslam: “This was a race weekend to forget. We have identified some issues, and we have to solve these. I am confident that the entire team will work hard to bring us further up the ranks soon. We need to go away from here and regroup if we want to be strong for the next races. We must now look to move the bike forward.”

Troy Corser: “We are disappointed with the way the weekend has ended. I felt like we had a good set-up for both the wet and dry conditions, and I was really confident going into the races today. In race one I got away well and led the early laps. The bike felt good for the first five to six laps then the grip from the rear tyre became a real issue. I don’t know why it happened, we need to have a look at the data and see. Race two I decided to take it a bit easier in the early laps to save the tyres but I began to lose too many positions. So I then started to push and clipped the curb with my engine casing and lost the front – crashing out of the race. On the whole it was a difficult weekend and one we need to analyse in more detail.”

Berhard Gobmeier – BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director: “This was a disastrous weekend and we cannot be satisfied with results like these. We stayed far behind our own expectations, so we now have to analyze the reasons for our weak performance. We have to and we will work hard to perform better.”

Two Millionth BMW Motorcycle.

BMW Motorrad celebrated the two-millionth motorcycle to roll off the assembly line at its BMW plant in Berlin Spandau. Motorcycles have been manufactured on this site since 1969 and bikes from the plant have been exported to 130 nations around the world.

This manufacturing milestone, which occurred on 6 May, 2011, was celebrated in style with a special ceremony attended by Klaus Wowereit, Governing Mayor of Berlin, BMW Motorrad employees across the company and a host of invited guests.

The bike which marked the milestone – a one-off special-edition R 1200 GS – was unveiled to a selection of VIPs and journalists by streetbike freestyle legend Chris Pfeiffer, after which it was handed over be raffled off as part of the ‘be Berlin’ campaign to promote the city.

Christian Pfeiffer said: “I’m really proud to present the two millionth BMW motorcycle here today. I have a really busy schedule but this kind of thing doesn’t happen every day so I really wanted to be here.”

Pfeiffer then parked the GS and leapt onto his F 800 R stunt bike to perform a special show in front of the invited guests and members of the Berlin plant workforce. He finished his display with a burnout with his rear tyre rubber spelling out ‘2,000,000’ on the tarmac.

Hendrik von Kuenheim, Head of BMW Motorrad, said: “BMW motorcycles embody ‘sheer riding pleasure’ in its most direct form and these machines are ambassadors of the BMW brand – and at the same time ambassadors of Berlin – all over the world. BMW bikes are exported with ‘Berlin’s air in the tyres’ to 130 countries and the long-standing relationship between Berlin and the BMW Group looks set to continue for a long time.”

With 1,900 employees the BMW factory in Berlin produces up to 510 motorcycles a day from all model series, as well as about 24,000 brake discs for the car division. The annual motorcycle output in 2010 amounted to 97,076 machines, whereas in the first year of production in 1969, a total of 12,000 motorcycles were produced in Berlin.

Arctic Charity Adventure.

News from Vines Bikes of Guildford and Caterham.

BMW R 1200 R riders set off on Arctic charity adventure
Circle 2 Circle trip aims raise £10k for Wiltshire Air Ambulance

Two BMW R 1200 R riders set off from the Avebury stone circle in Wiltshire on the first
stage of their 4,500-mile charity ride to Nordkapp in Norway, the most northern point of
Europe, deep within the Arctic Circle.

Neil Hardman, 37, a police traffic motorcyclist, and Dave Smith, 52, from the MINI plant
in Oxford, are riding in aid of the Wiltshire Air Ambulance and are hoping to raise
£10,000 to help support the life-saving service. The trip took on a particular poignancy
after Neil’s original co-rider for the trip was injured in a road traffic accident last year and
was picked up by the Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

The 4,500-mile route - from ‘Circle 2 Circle’ - will see the pair ride through Denmark,
following the eastern seaboard of Norway up to and beyond the Arctic Circle and on to
Nordkapp, the most northern point of Europe. From here, the turn south and travel up
to the Russian border then on via Sweden, along the coastline of the Baltic Sea and
back to the UK via Denmark, arriving back at the Avebury stone circle on 07 June. The
duo are, where possible, staying with friends and in youth hostels and will be collecting
donations as they travel.

Along they way, Neil and Dave will have to contend with long days in the saddle, wild
elk and reindeer wandering onto the roads, a blanket 50mph speed limit throughout
Norway. Perhaps their biggest obstacle is the Scandinavian climate, which ranges from
bitterly cold in the snow-capped mountains, torrential rain where cold and warm air
meet through to blazing sun lowlands and even almost constant daylight – with the sun
being above the horizon for up to 22 hours as they reach Nordkapp.

Neil and Dave are riding on a pair of 2011 R 1200 R roadsters on loan from BMW
Motorrad UK and wearing the warm, waterproof and protective Streetguard 2 suit, ideal
for the variable Scandinavian climate, supplied by BMW Rider Equipment. The R 1200
R’s panniers and economical engine will let the riders carry the kit they need to brave
the weather and last the distance between petrol stops in the remote parts of Northern
Europe.

Neil Hardman said: “I work on the roads policing unit in Wiltshire and I’ve attended
many accidents where the Air Ambulance has been absolutely critical in saving
people’s lives. It’s such a vital service and it’s under threat as funding is being cut from
the government. I wanted to choose a trip that was a true challenge – and would help
raise money and awareness for such a worthy cause.

David Smith said: “I came to be involved in the trip when Neil was visiting the BMW
Group plant in Oxford and had mentioned that his original travelling companion had
been injured and he was looking for someone to join him. Someone mentioned that it
was ‘exactly the kind of crazy thing Dave would do’ and, well, here I am. It’s a wonderful
cause and one hell of a ride, but one which we hope will help save lives in the future.”

To follow the progress of Neil and David as they travel to Nordkapp and back and learn
more about their chosen charity, visit www.circle2circle.eu, where they’ll be uploading
photos, stories and videos as they travel.

Buildbase BMW Motorrad finish on the podium and in the points at Croft

A wet and windy weekend at Croft Circuit saw local rider Barry Burrell take third place in a BSB-EVO race and the Buildbase BMW Motorrad team take their first British Superbike championship points. Superstock 1000 rider Richard Cooper secured fourth place in the championship standings with a top five finish.

The first British Superbike and BSB-EVO fixture of the day was lashed with rain, leading to difficult tyre choices for the teams. John Laverty, having worked on a new setup overnight with the team, brought his BMW S 1000 RR home in lucky 13th place to take Buildbase BMW Motorrad's first Superbike points of the season. Fellow BSB rider Ian Lowry crossed the line right behind him, but was given a ten-second penalty for an overtake as the yellow flag was lifted following a crash earlier in the race. Despite this time penalty, he took 18th position. BSB-EVO rider Barry Burrell retired on lap nine with tyre issues.

The second race saw John Laverty start from the fourth row and Ian Lowry the fifth. Barry Burrell took third place in the BSB-EVO class and 17th overall and was cheered by the crowds at his local race when he collected his trophy from the podium. Team-mate Ian Lowry brought his S 1000 RR home in 14th place to secure his first points of the season. John Laverty, having been slowed by the safety car after race one winner Jon Kirkham and Michael Laverty crashed out of the first lap, brought his bike home in 21st place.

Richard Cooper, Buildbase BMW Motorrad's Superstock 1000 rider, qualified on the front row for the race. Richard was caught up in the rush for the first corner, running in nineth position by the end of the first lap. However, he worked his way back up through the pack and finished in fifth position, securing fourth place in the championship standings.

Stuart Hicken, team principal, said: "This feels like the first weekend when every one of my riders has been racing, rather than developing. We've had our first points of the season in British Superbikes for both Ian Lowry and John Laverty, Richard Cooper's secured fourth in the Superstock 1000 championship and Barry Burrell took the second BSB-EVO podium of the season - at his home race. I'm very pleased with today's results, which show we're on track to be a real contender by the fifth round - which was always my prediction. With new gearboxes and engine modifications to get more power from the Superbike engines, I'm very much looking forward to Thruxton and the upcoming races."

The party goes on.

News from Vines BMW Bikes.

The party goes on.
The 11th BMW Motorrad Days on 1–3 July 2011 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

On 1–3 July, Garmisch-Partenkirchen will again be firmly in the hands of BMW Motorrad, Husqvarna Motorcycles (the second motorcycle brand of the BMW Group), and their international fan community. This weekend will again see over 30,000 guests converge here from all over the world to celebrate the eleventh BMW Motorrad Days.
The largest BMW Motorrad meeting in the world has now become a fixed major event in the biker scene. Anybody who has been here once, won’t miss the opportunity to be here again. This year too, the guests can expect BMW Motorrad and Husqvarna Motorcycles to present not only their model range, but also a varied support programme.

Variety in its purest form.
Not only the BMW Motorrad team from the World Superbike Championship will be there, but also the four times world stunt riding champion Chris Pfeiffer (41). A native of Schongau, Bavaria, he will again be thrilling onlookers with his unique motorcycle acrobatics. “I have a lot of new tricks,” he revealed. “The bounce to crosslegs, for instance, I find pretty cool. In an overhanging wheelie I brake so suddenly that I’m catapulted out of the seat and land crosswise on the rear footrests. And all this while I’m still doing the wheelie! I’m really looking forward to Garmisch, it’s an absolute highlight on my schedule.”
Some things, though, don’t need an engine: Igor Obu, holder of the world long jump record at 42.11 m, and his team will be showing onlookers the stunts that can be done with a mountainbike.
Yet the guests, too, can prove their skills. On an area of 10,000 square metres, the BMW Enduro Park will be offering training units on BMW GS models. On a Husqvarna X-track they can learn how offroad professionals manoeuvre their Husqvarnas at their extreme limits, and experience at first hand the potential of these vehicles on the terrain.
As in the previous years, nearly all BMW Motorrad models can be booked for extensive test rides. Exclusive tours with a guide can be reserved on the internet under www.bmw-motorrad.com/testride. BMW Motorrad can also offer novices without a driving licence to try their hand at riding motorcycles on the Garmisch Olympia Stadium carpark
All visitors, though, can try their hand at coming into the possession of a BMW motorcycle. This year too, there will be a raffle for two two brand new BMW motorcycles. Friday evening will decide the winner of a BMW G 650 GS, and on Saturday evening a biker can look forward to a BMW R 1200 R.

Great guests with action, fun, and partying.
From a spacious Radio Gong platform, the Gong presenters Viola Weiss and Stefan Galler will be hosting the programme and introducing Troy Corser, among many others. The BMW Motorrad plant pilot from the World Superbike Championship will be giving autographs and posing for photographs with motorcycle fans. Good music will be provided by prominent Gong DJs.
Besides the actor Hannes Jaenicke, who will again be there at the coming BMW Motorrad Days, the globetrotter Michael Martin will be firing his audience’s wanderlust with presentations of impressive journeys on his motorcycle.
Also the party atmosphere in the evening has become legendary. So this year too will see live bands and DJs charging the atmosphere on Friday and Saturday evening. The party will then be joined by Gerry & Gary on Friday evening, and Dreirad and Blechblos’n on the Saturday.

Two wheeled rarities and legends.
A special exhibition will be presenting the milestones of cladded BMW motorcycles from the historical BMW Classic collection. This will be complemented with the Classic Parade on the Friday, and the major Motorcycle Parade on the Saturday. The traditional bikers’ church service will be held on Sunday at noon.
There’s one thing though we can all be sure about: the BMW Motorrad Days will again be catering to every taste and thrilling all ages.

All you need to know about BMW Motorrad Days.
The event premises lie directly next to the camping area of 15,000 square metres. Overnight guests looking for accommodation in various hotel categories are urgently recommended to make their bookings under
bmw-motorrad@gapa.de.
Further details and soon the full programme of events can be viewed on the internet underwww.bmw-motorrad.com/motorraddays and www.facebook.com/bmw.motorrad.

Haslam on the podium at Monza!

Haslam on the podium at Monza!

2011 Superbike World Championship, race report from Monza, Italy

Today’s World Superbike round from Monza was packed full of drama, with Leon Haslam scoring a podium finish in race one and then getting knocked off his S 1000 RR on the very first lap of race two. Troy Corser put in two strong performances with a seventh and a fifth, while BMW Motorrad Italia’s Ayrton Badovini scored his best WSBK result to date, with a sixth place in race two.

In perfect weather conditions it was Troy Corser who made the best start to race one on his RR, taking the early lead from fourth on the grid, before being passed on the slipstream at the start of lap 2 on the long start-finish straight by Eugene Laverty and Max Biaggi.

Leon Haslam, meanwhile, had fought his way from sixth up to fourth, passing his Australian team-mate in pursuit of the leading trio of Laverty, Biaggi and Marco Melandri. As Laverty took a commanding lead on the way to his maiden WSBK victory, a dramatic and entertaining race-long battle ensued between Haslam, Biaggi and Melandri, with all manner of late-braking and slipstreaming antics, as well as some tough moves being exchanged by all three riders.

On the RR, Haslam gave as good as he got, and fought his way up into third place – and his second podium for BMW Motorrad Motorsport – despite a late charge by former 250cc world champion Marco Melandri. Troy Corser finished race one in seventh, while BMW Motorrad Italia’s Ayrton Badovini finished in 11th.

Race two was just as eventful. While Troy Corser again took an early lead, his team-mate Leon Haslam’s race came to a premature end when he was knocked off by another rider at the very first turn.

When pole-sitter Max Biaggi took the lead and started to rack up a series of fastest laps, Corser’s best hope of staying with the amazing speed of the current WSBK champion was to benefit from the slipstream effect. He was soon caught and passed by Biaggi’s team-mate Leon Camier but managed to hold a solid third place until lap 6, when an aggressive move by Marco Melandri squeezed out Corser and in fact cost him three places.

The experienced Australian kept his cool though, regrouped and spent the remainder of the race chasing down Michel Fabrizio and Noriyuki Haga, eventually finishing in a strong fifth place, just 4.502 seconds behind double race winner Eugene Laverty. Behind Corser, and scoring his best ever WSBK result, was BMW Motorrad Italia’s Ayrton Badovini, who finished in sixth place.

Troy Corser: “On one hand I am happy with the way the two races have gone today but on the other hand I am slightly frustrated. I got a great start in both races and led the early laps. The bike felt good on the whole, we had a few tyre issues in race one which saw me slip back, and in race two I was pretty happy until I was squeezed out at the first corner by Marco Melandri. From there I lost some time and I just couldn’t get that back. The pace we showed this weekend suggested that we could push for the podium, but sadly that didn’t happen with me today. We have a test now before Salt Lake so hopefully we can continue to improve on what we have done already.”

Leon Haslam: “In race one I didn’t get the best of starts and I also made a few mistakes in the early laps which meant I had some work to do to catch the leading bunch. Still, I felt like I had the pace to run with the leaders. Max and I held each other up slightly which saw Eugene get away at the front but on the whole I was happy with the race and the bike. In race two I was hit from behind at the first corner on lap one. I am not 100% sure what happened but I crashed out of the race after getting a much better start. Following the crash I was taken to the medical centre where it was confirmed that I have broken a toe on my right foot, but I don’t see it being a problem for our forthcoming test, or the races in Salt Lake.”

Berhard Gobmeier – BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director: “On the whole we are happy with today. We are glad that we could achieve our second podium of the season. Obviously we were expecting a little bit more, but unfortunately Leon’s second race was finished early. With Troy we had some issues with the tyres as they seemed to wear quite quickly but still we are happy. It was clear in both races that we were able to do similar lap times and be as strong as the Yamahas. This means we have the speed. We just need to be a bit more consistent and fine-tune some of our race strategies. Now we are looking forward to the next races in the USA. I also want to congratulate Team BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike for their sixth position with Ayrton Badovini. This is a strong performance.”

Results

Race one: 1. Laverty (IRL – Yamaha), 2. Biaggi (ITA – Aprilia), 3. Leon Haslam (GBR – BMW Motorrad Motorsport), 7. Troy Corser (AUS – BMW Motorrad Motorsport), 11. Ayrton Badovini (ITA – BMW Motorrad Italia)

Race two: 1. Laverty (IRL – Yamaha), 2. Melandri (ITA – Yamaha), 3. Fabrizio (ITA – Suzuki), 5. Corser (Aus – BMW Motorrad Motorsport), 6. Badovini (ITA – BMW Motorrad Italia), DNF. Leon Haslam (AUS – BMW Motorrad Motorsport)

Points: 1. Checa – 145, 2. Melandri – 118, 3. Biaggi – 117, 5. Haslam – 84, 11. Corser – 46, 12. Badovini – 35

The WSBK ‘Fast Show’ at Monza

News from Vines BMW Bikes of Guildford and Caterham.

The WSBK ‘Fast Show’ continues at Monza.

Motorcycle racing fans should prepare themselves for plenty of high-speed action on the weekend of 7-8 May, as the Autodromo Nationale di Monza hosts the fourth round of this year’s Superbike World Championship.

The historic circuit is a fans’ favourite due to the really high speeds achieved by the riders (over 320 km/h), the opportunities for overtaking thanks to slip-streaming, as well as many chances to pass on the brakes throughout the race. The circuit requires more than just a fast motorcycle though – anything less than 100 per cent commitment from the rider and they can easily lose sight of the leading pack.

For BMW Motorrad Motorsport, Monza holds special memories, as it was the track where the team celebrated its first ever WSBK podium, thanks to Troy Corser’s heroic efforts on the RR in May 2010.

“Last year we had a successful weekend at Monza, celebrating the first podium for BMW Motorrad Motorsport,” said the Australian who is riding for this third consecutive year with the team. “From a rider’s view, Monza is not very technical, as it is more about the performance of the bike. You have very fast sectors and hard braking, so we need to make sure that we don’t suffer the same issues with the tyres that we had in Assen during Saturday’s Superpole and Sunday’s second race. We’ve been focussing our efforts on sorting out those issues, but our performance on hard tyres shows that we are heading in the right direction so I am confident that we can build on that in Monza.”

Leon Haslam has had a strong start to his debut season on the RR, and is currently fifth in the championship standings, only 21 points behind second placed rider Max Biaggi. He finished on the podium at Monza last year, alongside Corser, and is hoping to be back up there in front of the Italian fans at the ultra-fast circuit.

“I’m really looking forward to Monza. Troy got on the podium there last year and it is a circuit which I like and one which I think will favour the RR. Since the last round at Assen, I’ve been to the workshops in Germany and sat down with the team to come up with a plan of action for this next race weekend. We know where we are with the RR and what needs doing, so I am confident in that we can make that next step forward at Monza. We are showing that we can run in the top five on a regular basis, but we just need to take that a step further and push for the podium and race wins. For sure the Yamahas and the Aprilias will be fast at Monza but I am confident that what we have as a package will allow us to compete.”

Haslam’s confidence is shared by BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director Bernhard Gobmeier, who believes that the circuit characteristics will suit the RR and offer the team riders a real opportunity to go for glory in Italy.

“We are all really looking forward to Monza,” he said. “The team is going there with very good memories, as it is the place where last year they could celebrate the first podium for BMW in the Superbike World Championship. I think that the fast circuit should also suit our S 1000 RR this year, so we are hoping to continue to build from what we learnt at Assen, where Troy and Leon showed with their top lap times, what is possible. We are very confident that we can achieve success in Monza, so we will be travelling to Italy in a really optimistic mood.”

This will also be a ‘home’ round for the BMW Motorrad Italia team, with Aytron Badovini returning to the circuit where he was victorious on the RR in last year’s FIM Superstock Cup race and was joined on the podium by his team-mate Daniele Beretta. Badovini will be aiming for more WSBK championship points this time around, while his team-mate James Toseland will be hoping that his recovery from a wrist injury will allow him to compete at the highest level.

Whatever happens, expect two thrilling races at the 5.793 km circuit, with the highest speeds, the hardest braking and arguably the most passionate fans in motorsport.

First podium finish of 2011.

News from Vines BMW BIkes of Guildford and Caterham.

First podium finish of 2011 for Buildbase BMW Motorrad.

Barry Burrell took Buildbase BMW Motorrad's first podium place of the year in the day's first BSB-EVO race. Richard Cooper improved on his qualifying position to take fourth in the Superstock 1000 race. Ian Lowry continued the development of his bike with the assistance of suspension expert Peter Goddard and took two solid 18th places in the British Superbike Championship. All three were cheered on by fellow BSB rider John Laverty, currently resting his injured finger ahead of his return to racing at the next round.

The best result of the day was from Barry Burrell who was running in fifth position in the EVO class when riders Glen Richards and Simon Andrews crashed out of the race ahead of him. Barry kept up the pace and held off a late challenge from James Hillier to take his and the team's first podium finish of the season by placing third. Also out on the track was fellow BMW S 1000 RR riding teammate Ian Lowry, who had a tough race after running straight on at Knickerbrook. However, he rejoined the fray and fought his way back up to 18th.

In the second race, Barry's starting position of third EVO bike gave him a good start, but a big crash involving Josh Brookes saw his pace slowed during the yellow flag and subsequent time behind the pace car. Once the race got underway, he pushed on but finished as seventh EVO rider past the chequered flag. Ian Lowry finished 18th again. Having made progress with his bike setup, Lowry was moving through the pack but was slowed by the yellow flags.

Barry Burrell said: "I was a bit surprised but very pleased by the result. It's not the way I wanted to get my first EVO podium but I'll take it! We were nowhere all weekend but we tried new gearing, of all things, just before the race and everything just came together and it felt like a whole new bike. The second race was pretty good too, I was in fourth place but I pushed a little too hard and I think I cracked the back wheel coming over a kerb. I'm feeling very, very confident about the next races at Croft, my local circuit."

In the final race of the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, Richard Cooper battled at the front of the Superstock 1000 pack, where a brake issue forced him to re-adjust his lever on the fly which knocked him back to seventh. However, Richard upped his pace and brought his BMW S 1000 RR home to a hard fought fourth position by the chequered flag.

Stuart Hicken, team principal, said: "We started this weekend rather disappointed as John Laverty was ruled out of racing with a quite severe finger injury. But things definitely have come together, we've made great strides forward. We've had Peter Goddard assisting with setup and he found something that worked for Barry and got him our first podium of the season. Richard just missed out on a podium finish due to a brake problem but we're very happy with fourth. Ian continued improving his setup and I'm confident that by the fifth meeting of the year, we'll be mixing it in the top ten."

The team will next be taking to the track at Croft on 13-15 May.
