Thieves steal two race bikes

BMW Motorrad’s second Superstock 1000 title victory marred by theft of race bikes and equipment.

Richard Cooper takes title at Silverstone round – but thieves steal two race bikes, tools, wheels and equipment that night.

Buildbase BMW Motorrad rider Richard Cooper has secured the Metzeler National Superstock 1000 title at Silverstone after an action-packed race at the famous Silverstone circuit on 25 September. The 2011 title is BMW Motorrad’s second consecutive victory for the S 1000 RR in the high-competitive showroom-based series, following Jon Kirkham’s championship success last year

However, the team’s outstanding success has been overshadowed by the theft of over £100,000 worth of race bikes, tools, equipment and parts from the team’s base near Ashby-de-la-Zouch in Leicestershire.

Richard Cooper’s Superstock S 1000 RR and John Laverty’s BSB bike were stolen between 21:30 and 03:00 following the team’s return from the Northamptonshire circuit. The thieves broke into the team's race truck and the locked key cupboard to obtain the keys to an LDV support van which housed the two motorcycles.

Meanwhile, they also loaded up their own van with valuable and unique parts and equipment including ten sets of wheels, three full Arrow exhaust systems, a brand new pair of Bitubo forks, a roller starter and all the team's new Bosch tools. The rented LDV support van has since been found burned out in Staffordshire.

Buildbase BMW Motorrad have offered a £5,000 cash reward to information leading to the return of the motorcycles or information leading to the arrest of the thieves. Anyone with information can contact team boss Stuart Hicken on 07969 056829.

Stuart Hicken, team principal, said: “This is an absolutely awful way to wake up. Yesterday we were on top of the world having taken the title, today we’re at an all time low. Having things stolen is a terrible experience, but when it’s something as organised and planned, and extensive, as this, it shocks you to the core.

“It’s too early to say too much, especially with the final round of the season just two weeks away. I hope that the motorcycles haven’t been destroyed. There are so many parts which have been custom made that they can be easily identified. We’re just hoping that we’ll get them back – which is why I’m offering a £5,000 reward for their return or for information leading to a prosecution.”

Before the news of the theft broke, Superstock 1000 Champion Richard Cooper said: “I’m feeling relieved! That was the hardest race of my life and definitely the worst start of my life,” said Richard after the title victory celebrations. “I fought back from 20th to sixth, all the while nervous of braking too hard or opening the throttle too fast. It’s a big result for me and for the Buildbase BMW Motorrad team.

“I’d like to thank BMW Motorrad for giving me the opportunity to ride the S 1000 RR these past two years, for helping me cure my arm pump and helping us win this championship. I look forward to the final round at Brands Hatch where I hope we can round off the season with another podium finish.”

Richard Cooper Superstock 1000 title

Buildbase BMW Motorrad rider Richard Cooper secures the Superstock 1000 title at Silverstone.

Nottinghamshire rider Richard Cooper has won the 2011 Metzeler National Superstock 1000 Championship at the penultimate round. Cooper qualified in pole position for the race at Silverstone – a race that he had a 45.5-point lead heading into. Despite a poor start, which saw him drop back to 20th position, Cooper fought his way back through the pack to finish sixth, overtaking 14 riders on his way to the championship victory. With a 46.5-point lead and a maximum of 25 points available from the final round at Brands Hatch, Cooper has secured the title.

Richard Cooper said: “I’m feeling relieved! That was the hardest race of my life and definitely the worst start of my life! But I fought back from 20th to sixth, all the while nervous of braking too hard or opening the throttle too fast. It’s a big result for me and for the Buildbase BMW Motorrad team.

“I’d like to thank BMW Motorrad for giving me the opportunity to ride their S 1000 RR these past two years, for helping me cure my arm pump and helping us win this championship. I look forward to the final round at Brands Hatch where I hope we can round off the season with another podium finish.”

Barry Burrell, the team’s BSB-EVO rider, took a third and fourth place in the day’s two EVO races, which leaves him in third place in the highly competitive series. Lee Jackson, riding the team’s Superbike-spec BMW S 1000 RR, brought his bike home in 23rd and 26th places.

Stuart Hicken, team principal, said: “It’s been a very, very good weekend for us. We’d hoped that Richard and Barry would defend their championship positions – which we’ve achieved – but we’re also leaving with the Superstock 1000 title in the bag. Richard didn’t make it easy, but he delivered the title with a race still to run. We’d like to thank everyone involved for their support with taking Richard’s first ever title and BMW Motorrad’s second consecutive Superstock 1000 title.

“Barry delivered two more impressive results, a third and a fourth, while Lee has improved on his recent finishes, improved his lap times all weekend while also delivering very useful feedback which will prove to be very useful with the ongoing development of our S 1000 RRs.”

The final round of the year, Brands Hatch, takes place in two weeks time.

2011 Superbike World Championship

2011 Superbike World Championship race report from Imola, Italy

A top-five finish in race two was the best result that BMW Motorrad Motorsport’s Leon Haslam could manage at Imola today after the tough Brit crashed out of the first race while in sixth place and chasing down the leading pack.

Having qualified on the second row of the grid, Haslam made a decent start to the first race and was running in seventh after getting caught up in some close battles in the early stages. It took about five laps for Haslam to fight off early challenges from Marco Melandri and Sylvain Guintoli before he could start to gap these riders and close down Eugene Laverty and the leading riders.

However, Haslam crashed out of contention while pushing hard after his bike jumped out of gear on lap 8, leaving BMW Motorrad Italia’s Ayrton Badovini as the top S 1000 RR rider in the race. The Italian rode hard to finish in ninth, while Troy Corser recovered from a fourth row starting position to finish in 12th.

The sunny conditions continued for race two, with Haslam making a visibly better start into sixth, behind WSBK champion elect Carlos Checa. Leon then fought his way past Tom Sykes to move up into fifth, all the while fighting off the attentions of race one podium finisher Noriuki Haga, who eventually managed to squeeze past on lap 4.

On lap 6, Leon moved up into fifth place and tried to close the gap on the leaders, but came under increasing pressure from Marco Melandri, who got past on lap 10. However, Melandri out-braked himself soon after, allowing Haslam to regain his position. A mistake on lap 13 then allowed Eugene Laverty to slip through and take fifth off Haslam, but as leader Jonathan Rea was forced to retire with a technical problem, Haslam moved into the top five again.

Despite pushing Laverty all the way to the finish, Haslam wasn’t able to take the fourth spot off the Irishman and was forced to settle for fifth, while Ayrton Badovini secured another top ten finish. Troy Corser retired from race two with a suspected technical problem.

There’s no respite for the WSBK teams, as the entire paddock moves straight to France for the 12th round of the series, which takes place this coming weekend in Magny-Cours.

Leon Haslam: “In the early stages of race one I was struggling to push how I wanted to, but after a few laps I found a good rhythm and I was catching Checa and Sykes, who were fighting for the podium. Unfortunately I crashed out as I was having an issue with the gears, when I found a false neutral and lost control. In race 2 we made some small changes to try and improve the bike but I think the increase in air temperature meant things didn’t work out as we planned. I was having quite a few issues in the early laps trying to adapt to the changes. By that time the leading group had gone and I just had to try and maintain my position.”

Troy Corser: “In race one I got a pretty good start. Sadly I ran a little bit wide at the ‘Tosa’ hairpin and that prevented me from moving forward in the early stages. For the race we had made quite a few changes to the RR, so it took me a few laps to adapt and learn how to get the most out of it, but once I did I was able to run good lap times. In race two I felt something was wrong with the bike as I could hear a strange noise coming from it. I am not sure where it was coming from or what it was but something wasn’t right. So I decided to pull in and let the guys look over the bike rather than stay out there and risk crashing or damaging the bike further. It’s a shame because I felt good and we could have scored some good points.”

Bernhard Gobmeier – Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director: “After our good lap times on Friday and Saturday we of course expected more from the weekend. In the first race, we had a crash due to the bike jumping out of gear going into the turn. Up until then the lap times were great and Leon was looking good. In the second race the lap times were not as strong, so we were happy finishing in sixth. It was hard fought and well deserved, but there is room for improvement and we aim to transfer the information we collected here into top results next week at Magny-Cours.”

BMW Motorrad MCN Awards

BMW Motorrad takes three prestigious MCN Awards including Manufacturer of the Year.
BMW S 1000 RR takes Sportsbike over 601cc and K 1600 GT wins Tourer of the Year.

BMW Motorrad has been named Motorcycle News’ Manufacturer of the Year for 2011. In addition, the K 1600 GT was awarded Tourer of the Year and the S 1000 RR, which took two awards in 2010, was named Best Sportsbike over 601cc.

Judged and presented by Motorcycle News, the UK’s biggest-selling motorcycle publication, the annual MCN Awards recognise technical innovations, outstanding motorcycles and sales success within the industry.

BMW Motorrad took the prestigious Manufacturer of the Year Award, with the judges saying: “As one of a handful of firms to show real growth in a major downturn, BMW is obviously doing something right. Perhaps it’s the way the firm continues to innovate and advance motorcycling itself by setting new standards of technology and design.”

The new six-cylinder K 1600 GT was named MCN’s Tourer of the Year, which BMW Motorrad also won in 2010 with the R 1200 RT. MCN said: “The only real question was ‘K 1600 GT or K 1600 GTL?’ The GT stole the prize for its sharper handling and lighter weight. The engine is silken and strong, the range is good and comfort is exceptional. It looks good, with loads of presence, and comes with every electronic aid you could wish for, many as standard.”

In addition, the S 1000 RR was named Best Sportsbike over 601cc. The judges said: “Others have tried to meet the S 1000 RR’s standards but they’ve only closed in without nudging ahead. The engine is epic and the overall performance unbeatable.” In 2010, the S 1000 RR was crowned MCN’s Machine of the Year and Best Sportsbike over 751cc.

Adrian Roderick, BMW Motorrad General Manager, said: “It’s a real honour to be named Manufacturer of the Year and to have Motorcycle News’ panel of judges recognise the pioneering work of BMW Motorrad. With motorcycles like the K 1600 GT and S 1000 RR we are pushing the boundaries of safety, innovation and performance for riders while projects like the Concept e electric scooter and Advanced Safety Concept represent the future for BMW Motorrad.

“And MCN’s Awards are a very welcome confirmation that BMW Motorrad is moving in the right direction. To take a third award for our essentially unchanged S 1000 RR supersports bike reinforces the fact that it’s the best in its class, while having our new K 1600 GT recognised as Tourer of the Year reaffirms BMW’s traditional place at the head of the touring category.”

Buildbase BMW Motorrad

Buildbase BMW Motorrad's Richard Cooper doubles championship lead with another win.

Superstock 1000 Richard Cooper delivered another stunning weekend's riding at Donington Park, taking pole position, a class lap record and a race win at his home circuit. The Nottinghamshire rider overcame a slow start to lead for most of the race and took the fastest lap as he crossed the finish line. The win, his fourth of the season, extends his championship lead from 20.5 points to 45.5.

In the day's two British Superbike/BSB-EVO races, the team's EVO rider Barry Burrell finished third and fourth in class, while Lee Jackson, filling in for injured British Superbike rider John Laverty, took two 21st place finishes in the BSB class on his racing debut for the team.

Richard Cooper said: "It all went according to plan, except for the start! It gave me some work to do, but I enjoyed it. I had some work to do and I picked off the bikes in front on my way to the win. I feel like my riding is properly on form - and I got myself a lap record too, which is a nice little bonus. We're now in a great position for the final two races, I only need five points to secure the title. I'd like to thank everyone involved for all their help and support this weekend."

Stuart Hicken, team principal, said: "It's a good weekend when all your riders finish the races they start - and when they come back with a lap record and a win and a podium finish in the EVO class, well, that's a great weekend! Richard is absolutely on form at the minute and he's taken his second win on the trot. What's more, he broke the class lap record three times, the final time on the last lap when we want him to go steady! We're now in a great position for the final two rounds of the season.

"Barry rode very well too, delivering two great results and breaking his way into the BSB top ten during the second race. Lee Jackson had his race debut with the Superbike S 1000 RR and brought it home safely both times. But more importantly, thanks to his impressive racing experience and abilities as a development rider, his feedback on the bikes during this weekend has been vitally useful with setups across the team. It's been a wonderful weekend and we're all very excited for Silverstone."

The next race weekend is held at Silverstone in Northamptonshire in two weeks time.

2011 Superbike World Championship

2011 Superbike World Championship, round 10 race report, Nurburgring, Germany

In two completely contrasting races at the Nurburgring today, BMW Motorrad Motorsport’s Leon Haslam battled back from off-track excursions in each race to fight his way to achieve two respectable results on his S 1000 RR, finishing fifth and ninth respectively at the challenging German circuit.

In sunny conditions for race one, Haslam made a good start to the 20-lap race, slotting into seventh place after the first corner and then fighting his way up to fifth place in the early stages. As he set off after the top four in front of him, Haslam was visibly pushing hard but unfortunately ran off the track on lap six, eventually re-joining the race but sadly down in 14th place.

However, the hard-charging Brit was determined to make amends for his mistake, and started to claw his way back through the pack, moving up to 12th by half-race distance, and then skilfully passing Tom Sykes, Jonathan Rea, Joan Lascorz, Michel Fabrizio and Leon Camier within the space of a couple of laps to move up to sixth place. With Sylvain Guintoli several seconds in front of him, it took Haslam the remainder of the race to ‘reel-in’ his former team-mate, eventually passing him on the very last lap to secure fifth place on his S 1000 RR, a remarkable achievement considering his earlier misfortune.

BMW Motorrad Italia’s Ayrton Badovini scored yet another strong finish on his RR in ninth place, while James Toseland finished in 13th on his 200th WSBK race, two places in front of BMW Motorrad Motorsport’s Troy Corser, who finished his 370th WSBK race in the points in 15th place.

Race two couldn’t have been more different. The start was delayed by 10 minutes due to heavy rain in the Eifel Mountains, which saturated the circuit. Starting from sixth on the grid (due to the omission of the injured Max Biaggi from the starting line-up) a brave Leon Haslam made a reasonable start in the treacherous conditions, feeling his way around the circuit to determine grip levels. From seventh position, Haslam passed Marco Melandri and Eugene Laverty on lap 2, but just pushed too hard on lap 3 and crashed while closing down Sylvain Guintoli.

Haslam remounted, albeit it in last place, while the rain continued incessantly. James Toseland then crashed out of contention on lap 9, while his BMW Motorrad Italia team-mate Ayrton Badovini again made his way into the top ten, despite the atrocious conditions. The second half of the race saw Ayrton move up to ninth, as he saw Australian Mark Aitchison crash in front of him, with Leon moving up into 13th, behind team-mate Corser.

Moving past Corser into 12th place, the ‘never-say-die’ Derbyshireman gained another place when Leon Camier crashed out on lap 12. Then it was leader Noriyuki Haga who was the next victim, crashing his Aprilia out of the lead after having had a lead of over eight seconds. Then it was the turn of Tom Sykes to enjoy a spell out in front.

At this point, with riders gesticulating at the organisers to stop proceedings for safety reasons, as soon as the race reached two-thirds distance, the red flags came out and Sykes was indeed declared the winner, with Guintoli and Eugene Laverty completing the podium. Top BMW rider was Ayrton Badovini, who finished in seventh, while Haslam was awarded ninth, after having bravely remounted and battled through the adverse conditions. Troy Corser finished race two in 12th place, with only 13 riders making it through to the finish. After today’s results, Haslam remains fifth in the championship standings, Badovini ninth and Corser rounds out the top 15.

Leon Haslam: “In race one I got a good start and managed to pass two guys. Then I tried to bridge the gap to Eugene Laverty but just pushed a little bit too hard. I got a false neutral and ran off the track. To be fair, I thought the race was over. But I got my head down and managed to get back to fifth. I am happy to have managed that, but disappointed that I ran off. But the battling was fun for sure.

”I felt real good to be honest in race two. The crash was my fault as I clipped a white line which in these conditions is not good and I went down. But I managed to get back going and climb all the way up to seventh, but the race was stopped before I crossed the line and the results were taken from the lap before. The conditions out there were really bad and it probably should have been stopped earlier. I think I could have got on the podium today because my times at the end were really good. But it was the right decision to stop the race for sure.”

Troy Corser: “Today has been difficult for sure. The low starting position made life very difficult because the first corner tends to spread the field out and you just cannot make the time back. Race two was just so wet and I could hardly see what was going on. The rain was causing me to aquaplane everywhere and I was having some big slides. The rain kept coming and going, making life very difficult, and I just wanted to finish the race. I saw James Toseland crash in front of me and then I decided to just keep it upright and finish the best I could. It was the right decision to stop the race because it was becoming very hard to ride safely out there but I am just happy to bring it home and score some points.”

Head of BMW Motorrad Motorsport Bernhard Gobmeier: “The first race was very exciting. Initially, we had Leon’s run-off that cost him a few seconds. And in the end he missed the podium exactly by this margin. On top of that comes the fact that in the closing stages he was doing the fastest lap times. That showed that we are heading in a very good direction and are able to race at the front. In the second race we proved that we are very strong also in the wet. In these conditions we did top lap times, but the poor visibility and the extremely difficult conditions lead to the crash and prevented Leon getting better results. Maybe it would have been a different story if the race would have been stopped earlier and restarted. To sum it up: not amazing results, but a positive weekend because we proved that we are able to compete at the front.”
