Stephanie Rowe

British rider Stephanie Rowe wins place on BMW globetrotting ‘One World. One R 1200 GS’ adventure.

Five incredible riding tours to be undertaken by GS fans to celebrate the launch of the new R 1200 GS.

Five GS fans from around the world have been selected to help celebrate the launch of the new R 1200 GS by each completing an incredible riding tour on the new model.

British rider Stephanie Rowe, 25, from Hampshire, was one of the lucky five, and has been chosen to ride the 2013 GS through Europe, finishing at BMW’s headquarters in Munich on 02 March, the day of the motorcycle’s international launch.

Following her selection by the jury, who were impressed by her enduro racing experience, in depth knowledge of motorcycles and love of touring on two wheels, Rowe was invited to London under the pretence of a final interview. She was shocked to see that jury member Charley Boorman was there – and even more so when he informed her that she had been chosen to ride the European section.

Stephanie will ride the new GS through Spain, France, Italy, Austria and Germany, crossing both the Pyrenees and the Alps before arriving to a hero’s welcome at the BMW headquarters in Munich.

Stephanie Rowe said: “This is unbelievable! I’m really looking forward to riding the new R 1200 GS – and seeing for myself all the changes compared to its predecessor. This is a very special adventure and I’ll be making sure I share it with as many people as possible by blogging and using Facebook and Twitter to document my travels.”

Thousands of riders from around the world entered the ‘One World’ competition, putting themselves forward for a life-changing ride. The initial entries were whittled down to a select few, with the five most deserving were hand-picked by a jury of famous GS ambassadors, including adventurer Charley Boorman and Oscar winning actor Adrien Brody.

The four riders joining Stephanie on the other legs of the ‘One World. One R 1200 GS’ challenge are: Herbert Unger, 49, from Germany; Stephane Gautronneau, 39 from France; Alessio Cigolini, 34, from Italy and Salvador Echevarria, 41, from Spain.

Their experiences will be shared on www.bmw-motorrad.com/gs.

Setting off in early 2013, each of the five will be reporting on their own life-changing tours – through Asia, Africa, New Zealand, America and Europe – as the new R 1200 GS travels around the globe ahead of its eagerly-anticipated international launch.

EICMA

New BMW F 800 GT and 90 Years Special Edition models were unveiled at EICMA.

BMW Motorrad has introduced its new F 800 GT middleweight tourer and three 90 Years Special Edition models - the R 1200 GS Adventure, R 1200 RT and R 1200 R, to celebrate the manufacturer's momentous 90th year in 2013. The new motorcycles were unveiled during a press conference at the EICMA 70th Salone Internationale del Motociclo in Milan.

BMW F 800 GT.

The new F 800 GT, which replaces the highly successful F 800 ST, sets a new benchmark for middleweight touring motorcycles. The 'Gran Tourismo' model is offered with a comprehensive range of high-specification options, bringing innovations including Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA) and traction control to the middleweight touring class for the first time.

The F 800 GT offers an unprecedented balance of long-range comfort, optimised ergonomics and dynamic handling with the fuel economy, lower weight and value for money synonymous with the range of 800cc parallel-twin BMW motorcycles.

BMW F 800 GT highlights at a glance:
  • Punchy, economical 798cc parallel twin engine making 90bhp (66kW), an increase of 5bhp over the F 800 ST.
  • Adapted ergonomics for increased touring comfort with higher handlebars, repositioned footrests and enhanced seating comfort for both rider and passenger.
  • Newly designed fairing and body panels for further improved wind and weather protection.
  • Automatic Stability Control (ASC) and Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA) as factory-fitted options.
  • The latest generation of BMW Motorrad ABS, now as standard.
  • New, lighter wheels and revised suspension for improved stability, dynamic handling and rider comfort.
  • Optional all-new hard luggage system, featuring panniers and a top box.
  • Power reduction to 48bhp (35 kW) available.

90 Years Special Editions.

To celebrate nine decades of innovation, passion and adventure, BMW Motorrad has created three '90 Year Special Edition' motorcycles. The three models - the R 1200 GS Adventure, R 1200 RT tourer and R 1200 R roadster - all feature a Boxer-twin engine, the same layout used in the very first BMW motorcycle: the 1923 R32.

The three 90 Years Special Edition models feature a subtle, refined overall paintscheme in Sapphire black metallic, with fork legs and brake callipers anodised in gold, echoing the classic BMW Motorrad 'black and gold' paintschemes. All three also feature an exclusive nickel-plated and polished brass plate, bearing the inscription "90 Jahre BMW Motorrad"

The first opportunity to see 2013 models was in the UK at Motorcycle Live.

The F 800 GT and 90 Years Special Edition models join the recently unveiled, all-new R 1200 GS, HP4 supersport motorcycle, new F 700 GS and revised F 800 GS. The full 2013 range will made its UK debut at the Motorcycle Live show, held on 24 November - 02 December 2012, at the NEC in Birmingham.

90 Jahre BMW Motorrad

Nine decades of BMW Motorrad. 90 years full of passion for motorcycles, set through with pioneering technical innovations, record-breaking rides, historical racing victories and numerous world championship titels. In addition to guaranteeing riding pleasure for nine decades, BMW has also embodied attributes such as outstanding reliability, uncompromising suitability for everyday riding and lasting value throughout its history. The company is now marking this occasion with three exclusive “90 Jahre BMW Motorrad” (“90 years of BMW Motorrad”) models which showcase these exceptional qualities: the R 1200 GS Adventure, R 1200 R and R 1200 RT.

Three BMW motorcycles which stand as shining examples of the BMW Motorrad success story: The R 1200 GS Adventure, an institution in the long-distance travel enduro segment for ten years, the R 1200 R as a synonym for the traditional BMW roadster and the R 1200 RT, which has been the epitome of the “touring motorcycle” for over three decades.

To this day, BMW Motorrad engineers work to develop two-wheel vehicles just as they did 90 years ago ‑ with a single aim: to constantly improve motorcycling ‑ and since more recently also urban mobility ‑ and above all make it safer. With its groundbreaking technical innovations, BMW Motorrad has set milestones in the history of motorcycle construction, including the introduction of the first ABS system almost 25 years ago, the presentation of the first telescopic fork in serial production motorcycles in 1935, introduction of the Telelever as a solution for front wheel suspension in 1993 and most recently the first semiactive suspension in a serial production motorcycle – Dynamic Damping Control DDC, as fitted in the supersports bike HP4 from the end of 2012.

But nine decades of BMW Motorrad also reflect a tradition of well-established values and technologies. To this day, most BMW motorcycles still feature the maintenance-free shaft drive to the rear wheel for example. And contrary to short-lived, supposedly fashionable trends, solid and innovative technology made by BMW Motorrad ‑ without short-term changes in concept ‑ has enjoyed a constant growth in popularity among motorcycling enthusiasts for many years.

F 800 GT

With the new F 800 GT as the successor model to the F 800 ST, BMW Motorrad is enhancing its range in the sporty touring segment and setting a new benchmark among mid-range motorcycles.
The high-torque, water-cooled 2-cylinder in-line engine with a capacity of 798 cc continues to provide dynamic propulsion in the new F 800 GT. An increase in power has been achieved by means of revised set-up. It now has an output of 66 kW / 90 bhp (F 800 ST: 62.5 kW (85 bhp)) at 8,000 rpm. The new F 800 GT boasts an even more supreme drive with the maintenance-free secondary drive via toothed belt.

What is more, improved ergonomics, optimised wind and weather protection and an even more practically oriented luggage system provides the basis for genuine “Gran Turismo”. The new F 800 GT is also fitted as standard with ABS in line with the “Safety 360°” principle. Other optional systems such as Automatic Stability Control ASC and the Electronic Suspension Adjustment ESA ensure that the new BMW F 800 GT sets new standards in terms of safety and comfort within its segment.

As part of the BMW Motorrad program of special accessories, the new F 800 GT can also be fitted with an Akrapovič sports silencer. This slip-on silencer provides a particularly earthy 2-cylinder sound. Made of titanium and stainless steel it enables a weight reduction of approx. 1.7 kg as compared to the standard rear silencer.

Overview of new technical features:
  • Increased output of the F 800 GT as compared to predecessor model.
    66 kW (90 bhp) at 8,000 rpm. (F 800 ST: 62.5 kW (85 bhp) at 8,000 rpm).
