BMW Motorrad Goldbet SBK Team

BMW MOTORRAD GOLDBET SBK TEAM: A STRONG FINALE!

BMW Motorrad concluded its factory commitment in the FIM Superbike World Championship with a successful performance at Jerez. In the first race of the 2013 season finale, factory rider Marco Melandri fought for victory until the finish line, coming home in second on his BMW S 1000 RR and claiming the fastest lap. Unfortunately Marco could not take part in race two due to his injured ankle. His team-mate Chaz Davies finished the last races of the year in seventh and fifth respectively. Sylvain Barrier showed a strong World Superbike debut on a third RR of the BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team. He finished 12th in race one and fought within the top 10 in race two but crashed and slipped back to 13th. It was also a strong finale for BMW in the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup. Two weeks after Sylvain celebrated his second consecutive Riders' title with the BMW HP4 of the BMW Motorrad GoldBet STK Team, the German manufacturer today also secured the Manufacturers' title in the series.

Despite his injury, Marco only narrowly missed the victory in race one. Coming from fourth on the grid he improved to third right at the start. On lap two he put in the fastest lap of the race and overtook Tom Sykes to take second. From then on he stayed on the heels of leader Eugene Laverty. The two fought an exciting battle until the chequered flag. Marco was waiting for his chance and took it on the penultimate lap. He got past Laverty and took the lead. It was only in the final corner, when Laverty gave it another try and managed to overtake Marco. The Italian BMW rider crossed the line in second, slightly behind Laverty. Chaz meanwhile was not happy with his race. At the start, he improved from tenth to seventh, but he could not push to gain more positions. Thus, he stayed in seventh until the finish line. Sylvain had a faultless debut race in World Superbikes. From 16th on the grid, he put in consistent laps and improved some positions, coming home in 12th.

After race one, Marco had to be treated in the Clinica Mobile again and unfortunately he could not start in the second race. Chaz improved to fifth right at the start and in the early stages he was fighting in the front group. Over the course of the race, the gaps to the front increased. Chaz stayed in fifth until the finish line. Sylvain was getting more and more confident on his RR. He fought exciting battles with some established competitors and worked his way up to ninth. On the penultimate lap he then unluckily crashed but was able to re-join and cross the line in 13th. The winner of this race was again Laverty.

In the Manufacturers' ranking, BMW finished the season in third with 443 points. This marks the best ever season for BMW in the Superbike World Championship with the previous best score of 421 points in the 2012 being topped. In the Riders' classification, Marco is fourth overall with 359 points. Chaz follows directly behind with 290 points. BMW Motorrad congratulates Tom Sykes for securing the 2013 Riders' title and Aprilia for winning the Manufacturers' championship.

In the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup, BMW Motorrad secured its second Manufacturers' title after 2010 Thus, the new BMW HP4, which is equipped with the electronic damping system DDC, celebrated the Riders' and the Manufacturers' title in its first year in the championship. The HP4 which Sylvain won the Riders' title with two weeks ago was ridden by IDM-Champion Markus Reiterberger at Jerez. The young German finished today's final race in fifth. In doing so, he collected the points BMW Motorrad needed to stay in front of its rivals and to celebrate the Manufacturers' crown. South-African Greg Gildenhuys finished 12th on the other HP4 of the BMW Motorrad GoldBet STK Team.

Stephan Schaller (President BMW Motorrad): "During the last five years, BMW Motorrad have clearly shown a consistent growth, becoming one of the top teams in production based motorcycle racing in both Superbike and Superstock championships. In the last two WSBK seasons we established ourselves as a title contender, winning or being on the podium very often with both our riders. In the Superstock class, we won three Riders' titles in the last four years and two Manufacturer championships with two different models, the BMW S 1000 RR and the BMW HP4. I want to congratulate the team, the R&D department and our riders and all others who have contributed to make BMW Motorrad a strong player in the Motorsport. The experience we have gained in World Superbikes has been fundamental for BMW Motorrad as a brand as well as for the product development. In the last five years we learned a lot from the technical and sportive points of view, and we understood how important it is to stay committed to motorsports. BMW Motorrad will go on as protagonist in motorsports thanks to our comprehensive customer sport project."

Marco Melandri: "The first race was amazing. I gave everything to keep Eugene's pace. Already with five laps to go I could not ride like I wanted because I could not use my foot properly but it was quite okay thanks to the Clinica Mobile. On the penultimate lap he made a little mistake so I came close to him and could try to make a pass. It was not an easy situation because we were sliding a lot but I was in front on the last lap. Then in the last corner I thought that Eugene has nothing to lose in the championship and could give it a try so I preferred to stay inside but I braked too early. Eugene was very smart so in the end he made a nice pass on me and that was it. I was sorry for my team because I would have liked to celebrate the 100th podium of my career with a win but it was okay like this. Congratulations to Tom and Kawasaki, they had an amazing end of the season. After race one my ankle was too painful. I preferred to listen to my body and not to race. I also did not want to end my time with BMW with a bad result. The last two years were a really important time in my career. I met great people who became really close to me and ready to help me. For sure the most difficult step will be to leave them, because they loved me, and to re-start from scratch. I wish all of them the best for the future, because they are fantastic and deserve the best."

Chaz Davies: "P7 in the first race just seems to be where we are this weekend. I did not get the feeling that I wanted, I was struggling when turning and lacking grip. We made a lot of changes for today but we had a damp warm-up so we weren't able to evaluate these changes properly so I went into the race with a completely different bike, but I still had issues. I kept losing the front and eventually the rear seemed to break traction too easy. I just gave all that I had but more was not possible. For race two we changed the front tyre and it was definitely an improvement. I was faster than in race one in hotter temperatures so I was closer to the top guys but unfortunately not close enough. It was probably one of the toughest weekends of the season which is a shame to end on. Looking back on the season I have to say that on the whole I am happy. Thanks to BMW for giving me the opportunity to win in World Superbikes more than once. I collected three victories this year and challenged at the front and got multiple podiums. So again: 'Thank you' to BMW and the team, it was a good year."

Sylvain Barrier: "I really enjoyed the weekend, it was a great experience. Race one was amazing. I was really excited to get on the grid and then I was surprised by my lap times. I was not super quick but I was consistent and that is what I wanted. I was more than pleased with how my debut race went and was looking forward to even making it a little bit better in race two. I had learned more about the bike and felt better and better on it. I was a bit sad that I crashed but this is racing. I tried to give my best and wanted to finish the race in a good position. Overall I improved a lot over the weekend and I think I can be satisfied. I am very happy to be with BMW and grateful that BMW gave me this chance to race in World Superbikes for the first time."

Andrea Buzzoni (General Manager BMW Motorrad WSBK): "Today a very important period for BMW Motorrad comes to the end, with a very positive outcome. In last five years in the Superbike World Championship we experienced a steady growth of performance, which brought BMW Motorrad to be permanently among the top teams and able to fight for victories. In addition, In the Superstock Championship, BMW established a dominant leadership achieving three rider titles and 2 manufacturer titles.

This season in the Superbike Championship has been the best ever. Together our riders, Marco and Chaz, scored 121 points more than last year and 18 podiums, 3 more than last year and, for the first time, both of them won. The team was able to understand the needs of the two riders - who have different riding styles and physical characteristics - and enable them to win. We achieved those results thanks to the professional skills and the human qualities of all people involved in this successful project and, of course, thanks to the cooperation of R&D division and the race team. I want to thank all of them for this success. I'm proud that BMW Motorrad gave me this responsibility and I thank BMW for this confidence."

Stephan Fischer (Technical Director BMW Motorrad Motorsport): "First of all, I want to say a big 'Thank you' to everyone who was involved in this project. We have been a fantastic team and a real community. Every single person gave everything and this allowed us to reach our common target. With working very hard, everyone contributed their part to make the factory commitment in World Superbikes a success. From a technical point of view I can look back with pride on what we have achieved. Our bike has the perfect base and we technicians developed a very good understanding of what is needed to make it perform on the race track. Today Marco was very close to gifting himself and the team with a farewell victory. This showed the high potential of the team, the bike and the rider. We have also seen something else this weekend: Sylvain debuted on the WSBK version of the RR and Markus rode the HP4 for the first time. Both were fast from the word go. This proved how competitive our bikes are and how quickly we can adapt them to the individual requirements of each circuit. For us, the logical step is to now bring this on a wider platform which we will do with our extended customer sports programme. We will strengthen our presence in the national and international championships. Our customers around the globe can count on evidentially competitive bikes. We are looking forward to an exciting and successful future of BMW Motorrad in motorsports."

BMW R nineT

BMW R nineT – the essence of 90 thrilling years of BMW Motorrad.

The BMW R nineT, which has been created to mark “90 years of BMW Motorrad”, radiates purism and power in undisguised form. It skilfully blends the boxer engine’s rugged character and the design traits of various motorcycle eras with cutting-edge technology and a modular concept that offers the rider maximum scope for personalisation. Strictly reduced to the essentials, the BMW R nineT – or just nineT for short – is made all the more alluring by its hand-built feel and strong emotional appeal.

The classic roadster bike is built to cater to the many motorcycle enthusiasts who yearn for unadulterated, stress-free riding pleasure. When it came to developing the design of the nineT in particular, terms such as “puristic simplicity”, “emotion” and “authentic, traditional materials” were also high on the list of priorities. Styling cues from old-school motorcycle manufacture are thus united with the very latest drive and chassis components on the nineT to produce a sensational motorcycle that is just as adept at cruising along serenely as it is at powering down country roads.

Powered by a classic boxer engine.

Like the first ever BMW motorcycle from 1923 – the legendary BMW R 32 – the new BMW R nineT is driven by the classic flat twin boxer engine with its punchy response from standstill. This construction principle has been synonymous with unmistakable design, abundant torque delivery and inimitable acoustics for 90 years now. The nineT employs the 1,170 cc air/oil-cooled boxer unit. It produces 81 kW (110 hp) at 7,750 rpm and musters up a maximum torque of 119 Nm (88 lb-ft) at 6,000 rpm.

Conceived for maximum customisation.

The nineT pools together the genes from 90 years of BMW Motorrad and its unique concept has been designed to keep customisation fans happy. During each stage of the puristic roadster’s development, the focus was very much placed on enabling riders to tailor it to their personal preferences in a variety of ways. The choice of modifications ranges from BMW Motorrad genuine accessories to custom-made add-on or accessory parts from specialist customisers, making it possible to create a truly unique machine.

The high scope for customisation offered by the nineT is down in no small part to its special frame concept. The tubular steel spaceframe that was specially developed for the nineT incorporates the boxer engine as a load-bearing element. The frame’s basic construction consists of a front frame section with integral steering head and a rear section with swingarm mounting.

The removable pillion frame allows the nineT to carry a passenger or to be set up for just a solo rider, when it cuts a truly stylish figure. Together with the aluminium tail cover available as a special accessory, this injects the nineT with a striking solo character that is reminiscent of the early café racers.

Exhaust positioned on left with twin silencers and personalisation options.

The exhaust system that runs down the left-hand side with two silencers placed one above the other is fully in keeping with the concept of a classic sporty roadster. There is room for customisation here too, courtesy of the BMW Motorrad accessory range. Adding a real touch of technical finesse to the nineT, for instance, is the Akrapović unit made of titanium. By fitting a short or long connecting pipe, the silencer can furthermore be mounted in either a lowered or a raised position, radically altering the appearance and character of the nineT.

Traditional chassis design combined with high-performance technology.

The telelever usually fitted on the boxer models from BMW Motorrad has been replaced on the BMW R nineT by an upside-down telescopic fork borrowed from the S 1000 RR superbike, resulting in a distinctly classic look paired with absolutely top-class engineering. The rear suspension employs the paralever single-sided swingarm in conjunction with a central spring strut.

The housing for the rear axle drive includes three mounting points that can be used to attach a bracket for positioning the licence plate and light unit on one side, for instance. What’s more, the swingarm on the nineT is designed in such a way that a 17-inch wheel with a width of 6 inches can be fitted instead of the standard 5.5-inch-wide version and submitted for individual approval if applicable.

Designed as an out-and-out roadster, the nineT follows in the tyre tracks of role models from the past by featuring wire-spoke wheels with black anodised alloy, non-flanged rims, black aluminium hubs and stainless steel spokes. Radial 4-piston monoblock brake callipers work in unison with floating 320 millimetre brake discs and BMW Motorrad ABS to provide sure stopping power.

Pared-down design and hand-built feel.

One of the overriding design objectives was to reduce the bodywork as far as possible in order to achieve a puristic look. The attention to detail that consistently infused the work of the designers and engineers on the nineT is a further attribute that shines through over and over again.

The sides of the 18-litre aluminium tank have been painstakingly brushed by hand and then coated. The aluminium plate with embossed nineT lettering on the right above the air intake duct is likewise befitting of the bike’s hand-built feel.

The surfaces of many forged aluminium parts, including the yokes and the handlebar clamp bracket with BMW Motorrad lettering, have been glass bead-blasted and then given a natural anodised finish. The circular headlamp with the BMW emblem in the centre of the bulb cover pays homage to various role models from 90 years of BMW Motorrad.

A classic Black storm metallic paint finish with contrasting silver and metallic highlights was chosen to match the character of the nineT.

Specially designed electrical system to allow plenty of scope for customisation.

The bike’s electrical system has been specially configured for greater technical flexibility, thereby facilitating the installation of alternative electrical components, such as headlights or turn indicators.

Highlights of the new BMW R nineT:
  • Puristic design.
  • Hand-built feel of the workmanship.
  • Air/oil-cooled twin-cylinder boxer engine with a displacement of 1,170 cc. Output 81 kW (110 hp) at 7,750 rpm, maximum torque 119 Nm (88 lb-ft) at 6,000 rpm.
  • Ideally suited to customisation.
  • Modular frame concept with removable pillion frame and frame end-piece.

BMW R 1200 GS Adventure.

The arrival of the new BMW R 1200 GS Adventure marks the start of the next chapter in the success story of the large, boxer-engined GS models that extends back over more than 30 years. Since its debut in 2005, BMW Motorrad, the world’s most successful manufacturer of large-capacity travel enduros, has firmly established the big GS Adventure as the definitive machine for long-distance travel. It transports two-wheeled explorers to the farthest-flung corners of the world and allows them to keep pressing on when others have long since turned back.

The BMW R 1200 GS Adventure as the quintessential travel companion for expeditions and long-distance exploration.

The new R 1200 GS Adventure continues in this same tradition, building on the dynamic performance characteristics and excellent off-road and touring capabilities of the R 1200 GS to provide the new, ultimate solution for globetrotters, travel enduro aficionados and touring riders with a passion for off-road action.

The new R 1200 GS Adventure is powered by the same spirited air/liquid-cooled boxer engine featured on the R 1200 GS, with a displacement of 1,170 ccand an output of 92 kW (125 hp) at 7,750 rpm. The stand-out feature of the power unit – introduced last year after being newly developed for the R 1200 GS – is the new precision cooling system which uses water instead of oil as a cooling agent. Also new is the engine’s through-flow, which is now vertical for even more efficient power output, as well as the six-speed gearbox that is integrated into the engine housing along with the wet clutch. For the first time on a BMW production motorcycle, the maintenance-free cardan-shaft drive is now positioned on the left-hand side. With the aim of further improving the rideability of the R 1200 GS Adventure, especially on off-road terrain, the drive’s flywheel mass has been increased by around 950 grams and an extra vibration damper has been incorporated into the powertrain.

Designed, engineered and equipped for supreme globetrotting capabilities.

The big BMW GS Adventure is something of an icon amongst large-capacity travel enduros and is the top choice for world travellers on long-distance tours, even to the remotest regions of the planet. No matter whether it is negotiating tarmac roads, gravel tracks or rough terrain, the large-capacity GS Adventure gets its riders safely to their destination. This both compelled and inspired BMW Motorrad to make the new R 1200 GS Adventure even better in every way.

Like the R 1200 GS, the Adventure is also built around a robust and torsionally resistant tubular steel spaceframe. However, it has a larger 30-litre tank (10 litres more than on the R 1200 GS) to allow for an increased range, while the fuel tank itself is now made from lightweight aluminium. The R 1200 GS Adventure already comes equipped as standard with ABS, Automatic Stability Control (ASC), as well as the two riding modes “Rain” and “Road”, which enable the riding characteristics to be adapted to most road conditions. This further enhances the range of use of the new R 1200 GS Adventure considerably, at the same time as providing a significant safety boost on slippery surfaces in particular.

Three further riding modes can be added by ordering the optional Riding mode Pro feature, which is accompanied by the Enduro ABS and Enduro ASC add-ons for off-road riding. The three extra riding modes Dynamic, Enduro and Enduro Pro (which can be activated with a coding plug) make it possible to adjust the settings of both ASC and ABS and, if fitted, the semi-active suspension Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) to suit the specific requirements of off-road operation.

Besides new bodywork styling with even more masculine flair, the globetrotting abilities and greater off-road expertise of the new R 1200 GS Adventure are clearly brought to the fore by a new chassis set-up with a further 20 millimetres of spring travel, increased ground clearance and a trailing arm with modified geometry for even better handling. A larger windshield with convenient hand-wheel adjustment, additional air flaps as well as hand protectors greatly increase wind and weather protection. Wide enduro footrests, adjustable, reinforced foot-operated levers and completely restyled bodywork add the finishing touches to the look of the new R 1200 GS Adventure.

Highlights of the new BMW R 1200 GS Adventure:
  • Based on the same versatile overall concept as the R 1200 GS, with spirited twin-cylinder boxer engine and agile chassis, but with enhanced off-road prowess and globetrotting abilities.
  • Increased flywheel mass in the engine and additional vibration damper for even smoother running and superior rideability.
  • Spring travel 20 millimetres longer at front and rear compared to R 1200 GS.
  • 10 millimetres more ground clearance than predecessor.
  • Modified geometry of trailing arm for even sharper handling.
  • Completely restyled bodywork in distinctly robust and masculine GS Adventure design.
  • 30-litre fuel tank with similar range to predecessor.
  • ABS, ASC and two riding modes as standard.
  • Three further riding modes available as an ex-works option.
  • Semi-active suspension Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) available as an ex-works option.
  • More comfortable, tilt-adjustable bench seat.
  • Large, adjustable windshield and air flaps.
  • Wide enduro footrests.
  • Adjustable, reinforced foot-operated levers.
  • Robust engine and tank protection bar.
  • Wide range of special accessories and optional extras available ex-works.

Barrier wins FIM Superstock 1000 Cup

BARRIER WINS THE FIM SUPERSTOCK 1000 CUP TITLE ON THE BMW HP4

Sunday at "Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours" started very positively with the BMW Motorrad Goldbet STK Team celebrating factory rider, Sylvain Barrier winning the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup for the second year in succession. Sylvain finished fourth in the race on his BMW HP4 to take BMW Motorrad's third Superstock crown. In the first race of 13th round of the 2013 FIM Superbike World Championship, BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team factory rider Marco Melandri on his BMW S 1000 RR finished fifth while his team mate Chaz Davies retired early in the race. In race two, Chaz achieved a fifth place finish and Marco was seventh after a great recovery from sixteenth.

In the first Superbike race, both riders had a good start from the third row. Marco improved to fourth and Chaz to fifth. On the second lap, Chaz lost the front and came back to the pit to fix the bike but had to retire. Marco then slipped back to fifth position where he remained until the end of the race. The race was red flagged with three laps to go. Tom Sykes took the win. In race 2 both BMW riders made again a good start with Marco moving to fourth and Chaz to sixth. At the beginning of the second lap, Chaz overtook Marco and began to battle with Davide Giugliano. Marco got back past Chaz on lap 6 to take fifth, however he then ran on into the gravel losing a lot of time and rejoining in sixteenth. While Chaz was fifth again and kept this position until the end, Marco showed a strong recovery. He had good rhythm setting more than ten laps within the 1'39 bracket and managed to make his way up to eighth place. Towards the end of the race, Marco passed Toni Elias for seventh. The race was stopped with two laps remaining after several riders crashed as it started to rain. Tom Sykes won race two.

At the start of 9th race of FIM Superstock 1000 Cup Sylvain Barrier, on his BMW HP4, took the lead at the first corner, however the race would then be red flagged following a crash. In the second part, Sylvain made a bad start losing out on some positions while his team mate, Greg Gildenhuys became caught up in another rider's accident and was forced to retire. On lap 4, Sylvain took fourth place which he maintained until the end. Thanks to this result he won the 2013 FIM Superstock 1000 Cup with one more race to go. BMW Motorrad won Superstock titles in 2010 and 2012 with the BMW S 1000 RR, this year however the title was taken on the new BMW HP4, the first time ever for a bike equipped with an electronic suspension system (DDC).

Marco Melandri: "In race one I was struggling with the setting and I was not really fast, the result shows the potential I had. Before race two we decided to make a step back and setting up the bike so I could be consistent. Without that issue I could have been on the podium. At least I can say that I had more fun in race two than in race one. I was fast and overtook many riders to recover from the position which I slipped down to. Overall, I want to thanks my team they did an excellent job over the whole weekend. Next race is in Jerez, our test track, we know it very well so we'll start with a good setting and we could have chance to be on the podium."

Chaz Davies: "In race one the crash was strange, I was off the brakes but lost the front slightly and I couldn't recover it. I slid for ages and tried to get back up as I was holding the bike but in the end there was nothing I could do. I picked up the bike but there was a lot of dirt in the throttle so it was too dangerous to continue once we'd got back to the pits. Considering we missed the twenty three laps of race one which would have provided valuable data the bike didn't feel too bad in the early laps of race two. However later on I started to struggle when the tyre dropped a little bit and the bike got a bit more nervous at the rear. When the overall grip level dropped I started to push the front again and couldn't turn as I wanted. All in all, we perhaps lost out a bit from missing the time in race one but no excuses, we weren't fast enough and didn't get the right set up."

Sylvain Barrier: "It has been a fantastic season for me this year. I've really enjoyed working with BMW and the new BMW HP4. I really enjoyed battling with Niccolo Canepa all year as he's also been very consistent. It's also really great that once again we win the title here in Magny-Cours. Thanks to James Toseland who has supported me for three years now. It was a good race, in the first part of the race I made a really good start and had no problems so I wanted to get going. The second time the start wasn't as good so I rode carefully trying not to make any mistakes as I knew what I had to do to win. Thanks to BMW for having confidence in me and we'll see what happens next year."

Andrea Buzzoni (General Manager BMW Motorrad WSBK): "Today Sylvain and the BMW HP4 gifted us the second Superstock title in a row. It confirms the technical strength of our team, the BMW HP4 and Sylvain's talent. We want to thank Sylvain for the result. He managed the race in a clever way showing he's a mature rider and that he is ready to make a further step in his career and we wish him the best. Sylvain embodies the qualities of a winning rider: cleverness, talent and heart. In race one of the Superbike class Chaz unfortunately crashed while Marco was fifth and almost the contrary in race two where Marco went wide losing his position meaning he could not fight at the front, even if he demonstrated to be fast, while Chaz was fifth. Today Sykes was outstanding and I want to congratulate him for his performance. Today's result ended our possibilities to win the title, nevertheless it was not a bad season but we can fully assess this after Jerez."

Andrea Dosoli (Technical Director BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team): "The data we collected in the dry conditions on Friday were not enough to set up our RRs properly for the race. In race one, Marco was not happy with the set up so in race two we made a step back to a better known setting. With this setting Marco was faster and consistent, even if the result does not show it. In the early stages he went wide and re-joined the group quite far back but could recover and show good rhythm and speed. Without the issue we could have fought for the podium. Chaz unfortunately crashed in race one quite early so we could not evaluate the performance. In race two, he started well and for half of the race he was fighting for fourth place but struggled with corner-entry in the second half and finished fifth. Jerez is our test track, we have good knowledge of the circuit and data so we're confident we could get a good result."
