The new BMW S 1000 RR.

The new BMW S 1000 RR – the ultimate sports companion.

The new BMW S 1000 RR is receiving its world premiere at the Intermot 2014 motorcycle fair. With refined torque delivery and peak torque of 113 Nm (83 lb-ft), an increase in engine output of 4 kW (6 hp) to 146 kW (199 hp), plus a reduction in weight of 4 kg to 204 kg with a full tank of fuel and Race ABS (making allowances for equipment), the superbike that first debuted in 2009 is entering a new generation. Besides eliciting even sharper performance from the new S 1000 RR, particular attention was also paid to designing the bike to be even more rider-friendly. Whether it is used for everyday riding, flitting through bends on country roads or being put through its paces on the race track – the new S 1000 RR excels in every respect.

Optimised drivetrain for even greater performance and rideability.

The enhanced performance of the new RR in terms of drive power can be attributed to the re-engineered cylinder head with new duct geometry, new intake camshaft and even lighter intake valves. Furthermore, an airbox with a modified capacity combines with an intake system with shorter intake lengths to make mixture preparation more effective than ever and give the new S 1000 RR added punch. A further key contributing factor to the improvement in power and torque characteristics is the new exhaust system, which now dispenses with a front silencer and weighs around 3 kg lighter. Rideability and response from standstill both benefit from an increase in torque upwards of approx. 5,000 rpm, a more linear torque curve, as well as a wide torque plateau that allows the rider to summon up almost maximum pulling power between 9,500 (112 Nm) and 12,000 rpm (113 Nm / 83 lb-ft).

New frame structure and chassis geometry for superior riding precision and even better handling. Further improved Dynamic Damping Control (DDC) from the HP4 as an ex-works option.

Chassis-wise, the new RR has been honed with the introduction of a new, lighter frame structure offering an optimised blend of rigidity and flexibility. Together with the optimised chassis geometry featuring redefined values for the steering head angle, wheel castor, wheelbase and swingarm pivot point, it promises even better handling, increased traction and unequivocal feedback, particularly when riding at the limit. The tasks of wheel suspension and damping continue to be performed by fully adjustable spring elements, but with modified negative spring travel for more banking clearance and greater agility. As a factory-fitted option, the new S 1000 RR can also be specified with the new improved version of the electronically controlled Dynamic Damping Control (DDC) suspension – already familiar from the HP4 – that provides the basis for a chassis set-up with absolutely no compromises.

Three riding modes as standard, plus two more available for fine-tuned adjustment by opting for the Pro riding mode feature.

To enable optimum adaptation to the prevailing riding conditions, the new RR bike already comes with three riding modes as standard: “Rain”, “Sport” and “Race”. If the Pro riding mode option is selected, these can be supplemented by the two additional modes “Slick” and “User”. The Pro riding mode option also features Launch Control for flawless racing starts as well as the programmable pit-lane speed limiter for sticking exactly to the pit-lane speed limit. When this feature is activated, it has the additional effect of producing the impressive soundtrack familiar from the world of motorcycle racing. The HP Gear Shift Assist Pro, which can likewise be ordered as an ex-works option, enables lightning-fast clutchless upshifting and downshifting.

Refined control system set-up. Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) with precision calibration in seven +/- steps.

The new RR already leaves the factory with Race ABS (semi-integral) as well as Automatic Stability Control (ASC) included as standard. In conjunction with the optional Pro riding mode feature, it can be equipped with Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) including banking sensor and precision calibration. All control systems have been retuned and further improved in terms of their control precision and characteristics.

First ever superbike with cruise control (optional). Innovative instrument cluster design, new electrical system and lighter battery.

For the first time, the RR is now also available with an electronic speed control for staying within the current speed limits (ex-works option).

The multifunctional instrument cluster comprises a new dial for the analogue rev counter as well as a redesigned LCD display offering a far greater array of functions.

The new S 1000 RR furthermore features a new electrical system and a more powerful sensor box, along with a smaller battery weighing around 1 kg less.

Design that is more dynamic than ever with stunning colour schemes.

Last, but by no means least, there is the completely restyled bodywork that speaks an even more dynamic design language. The principle of the asymmetric headlight arrangement on the outgoing model has been retained as a characteristic distinguishing feature, yet the headlights have been repositioned and restyled to ensure that the new RR is recognisable as “new” at first glance. The dynamic design with its sporty, aggressive feel is given further impact by colour schemes with three very individual characters: Racing Red / Light White, Black Storm metallic and the BMW Motorsport colours.

Highlights of the new BMW S 1000 RR:

  • Increased power output and torque: 146 kW (199 hp) at 13,500 rpm and 113 Nm (83 lb-ft) at 10,500 rpm.
  • Even better rideability thanks to increased torque from approx. 5,000 rpm upwards as well as a more linear curve. A broad plateau of peak torque available in the rev range from around 9,500 up to 12,000 rpm.
  • Re-engineered cylinder head with new duct geometry, new intake camshaft and even lighter intake valves.
  • New intake system with shorter intake lengths, larger airbox and full E‑gas ride-by-wire.
  • Reduction in weight of 4 kilograms to 204 kg with a full tank of fuel (making allowances for equipment).
  • New exhaust system weighing around 3 kilograms lighter without a front silencer.
  • Riding modes “Rain”, “Sport” and “Race” as standard plus the option of the Pro riding mode with two additional modes, “Slick” and “User” (configurable), for optimum adaptation to riding conditions.
  • Launch Control for flawless starts as part of the optional Pro riding mode feature.
  • Pit-lane speed limiter for maintaining an exact speed in the pit lane as part of the optional Pro riding mode feature.
  • New, lighter frame structure with an optimised blend of rigidity and flexibility for more traction, greater precision and clear feedback.
  • Refined chassis geometry for even better handling, increased traction and unequivocal feedback at the limits of performance.
  • Fully adjustable spring elements with optimised negative spring travel for more banking clearance and greater agility.
  • Further improved version of electronic Dynamic Damping Control (DDC), familiar from the HP4, as an ex-works option.
  • Race ABS with optimised set-up.
  • DTC traction control with precision calibration in 7 +/- steps.
  • HP Gear Shift Assist Pro for fast clutchless upshifting and downshifting as an ex-works option.
  • New electrical system with a more powerful sensor box and lighter battery.
  • Electronic speed control as an ex-works option.
  • More sophisticated instrument cluster with extended array of functions and wide variety of information.
  • Completely restyled bodywork for an even more dynamic design language.
  • Innovative colour schemes with three individual characters:
  • Racing Red / Light White, Black Storm metallic and BMW Motorsport.
  • Extended range of optional extras and special accessories available ex-works.

BMW Motorrad Rider’s Equipment

BMW Motorrad Rider’s Equipment – 2015 Collection.

State-of-the-art products that have stood the test of time and remain as popular as ever , in-house developments of which our engineers and designers are rightly proud, a Ride collection that offers our bikers perfect protection, Style collections with the power to thrill our brand enthusiasts:

BMW Motorrad awaits the new 2015 season with joyful anticipation.

Heading the field is the GS helmet, a pure-bred enduro helmet with safety features also found in the professional sphere. Matching it are the GS enduro goggles, which are perfectly tailored to the outstanding ventilation system of the GS helmet.

This time round, however, the main focus of the BMW Motorrad Rider’s Equipment range for the upcoming season are the suits. The bandwidth of the collection stretches from summery biking gear for urban riding to high-end material designed as a dependable partner all the way to the limit.

The TourShell suit is an all-rounder for every season of the year, making it highly popular among riders of either gender. This year the latest-generation NP2 protectors are also on board. In pole position with its seamless professional safety package is the DoubleR suit, which BMW Motorrad is fielding as the ambassador of its sporting brand credentials. The Venting suit, made of a summery textile in denim look, is thoroughly persuasive, while the waterproof CoverAll suit fully lives up to its name: it can be worn over a complete business outfit on the office commute. And here’s what our male and female bikers alike asked for: we are offering, with immediate effect, the classy GS Dry suit in an identical colour combination for him and her. Over in the luxury touring class, meanwhile, the Atlantis suit – made using strictly sustainable methods – continues to set the tone.

Sports-minded riders won’t ever want to take off their DoubleR boots again – except perhaps for a quick trip into town, where the relaxed RIDE sneaker is a real show-stealer. For those who like their entire kit in racing quality, there’s also the DoubleR glove. And like the suit of the same name, the Atlantis glove delivers sheer luxury.

Three entirely different jackets have a smart concept in common: to lend each leisure outfit a strong presence while remaining an out-and-out biker’s jacket. The Club leather jacket is feisty-casual, while the DoubleR and Race jackets represent BMW Motorrad’s sporty side. The new cargo-look Rider trousers can be combined with all the jackets in the collection.

Bikers can also look forward to first-class functional clothing from the 2015 BMW Motorrad Rider Equipment range. Functional undergarments, as well as the Summer and Thermo functional socks, provide excellent ventilation, are perfectly tailored to the requirements of motorcyclists and finished to the highest quality. If required, the two-piece PCM suit featuring Phase Change Material can be worn over these garments – but under the actual biker’s suit – to ensure a perfect body climate even in inclement weather. With their small pack size and light weight, the two-piece Rainlock suit and the ProRain oversuit are useful assets to keep stowed away on board. If it comes to the worst, these are absolutely dependable bad-weather companions.

High-quality luggage, perfectly tailored to BMW motorcycles: the Function backpack worn on the body is a marvel of space and ergonomics, and can be quickly turned into a motorcycle bag, while the Softbag, available in two sizes, offers uncomplicated stowage space at the rear. A classic in a new guise, meanwhile, will be returning for duty in the 2015 season: boasting a new design and colour but preserving its laidback appeal, the robust Luggage roll is suited to practically any BMW motorcycle.

In customary mode, the Style collections offer cool-look, premium styles and upmarket accessories for all fans of the BMW Motorrad brand. The sporty, functional collection BMW Motorrad Dynamic Style and the iconic, laidback BMW Motorrad Roadster Style collection are sure to set pulses racing.

MCN Machine of the Year

BMW S 1000 RR voted MCN Machine of the Year

The incredible BMW S 1000 RR has been crowned Motorcycle News’ 2012 ‘Machine of the Year’ – the second time that the RR has taken the highest accolade in the MCN Awards. The RR also won the ‘Best Sportsbike Unlimited’ award for supersports machines with engines of any capacity.

The 2012 ‘Machine of the Year’ honour is an unprecedented fifth MCN Award for the S 1000 RR. Previous accolades include the 2010 ‘Machine of the Year’ and ‘Sportsbike over 751cc’ awards in its first year, as well as the 2011 ‘Best Sportsbike over 601cc’ award and this year’s ‘Best Sportsbike Unlimited’ title.

Praising the S 1000 RR, Motorcycle News said: “The incredible and class-redefining BMW S 1000 RR has once again scooped the Machine of the Year crown. It’s the second time the staggeringly capable superbike has won the award. BMW entered the hardest class in the world and led it at the first attempt in 2010. It scarcely seemed possible to improve on the original, but do it they did. MCN hailed the 2012 model as being as great a leap over the outgoing bike as the first S 1000 RR was over the Japanese competition.”

In addition, the BMW K 1600 GT has won the coveted ‘Tourer of the Year’ award for the second consecutive year; which itself took the title from BMW’s lauded R 1200 RT in 2010. The K 1600 GT and GTL variant have been a big sales success, re-emphasising BMW Motorrad’s dominance of the touring sector.

Explaining the K 1600 GT’s second consecutive category honour, MCN said: “BMW’s six-cylinder tourer is the stuff of concept model fantasies and boyhood dreams. With the performance of a sports car and the comfort of a Range Rover it’s just as special in real life. 160bhp, 24 valves, those corona headlamps and every extra you can think of, many of them included as standard, the imposing K 1600 GT continues to set the standard for trans-continental cruising.”

Judged and presented by Motorcycle News, the UK’s best-selling motorcycle publication, the annual MCN Awards recognise technical innovations, outstanding motorcycles and sales success within the industry.

Adrian Roderick, BMW Motorrad General Manager, said: “It’s a real endorsement for the UK’s biggest motorcycle publication to confirm that the S 1000 RR and the K 1600 GT are still the undisputed kings of their respective classes.

“To be recognised as the leader in two vital sectors, one which BMW Motorrad has been at the forefront of for decades, and one which it has entered and dominated immediately, proves that the pioneering work of BMW continues to pay off.

“With motorcycles like the K 1600 GT and S 1000 RR we are pushing the boundaries of innovation and performance for riders; while models such as the high-tech HP4 with semi-active suspension, and the C evolution electric maxi-scooter, represent the future for BMW Motorrad and of motorcycling itself.”

The new BMW R 1200 RS

The new BMW R 1200 RS – a new dimension in sports touring.

BMW Motorrad and the legendary RS production bikes – a model badge that continues to symbolise travel and sport in equal measure. In 1976, the R 100 RS became the first mass-produced motorcycle in the world to come with a full, frame-mounted fairing that had been developed in the wind tunnel. As the consummate all-rounder for both travelling and sporting deployment, it established the sports tourer segment, as it has been known ever since. With the arrival of the new R 1200 RS, BMW Motorrad is continuing this long tradition by unveiling a sports tourer powered by a flat-twin engine that succeeds in transposing the all-round qualities of the original BMW RS concept into the modern day to stunning effect. Whether darting along country roads, revelling in its dynamic performance with a passenger on board or going on a long touring holiday – the new R 1200 RS takes sports touring to a whole new and truly thrilling level.

Meaty, mightier boxer engine for dynamic sports touring.

The flat-twin boxer engine on the new R 1200 RS is the same DOHC drive unit that already powers the R 1200 GS, R 1200 GS Adventure as well as the R 1200 RT and the new R 1200 R. It produces 92 kW (125 hp) at 7,750 rpm and develops its peak torque of 125 Nm (92 lb‑ft) at 6,500 rpm. Compared to the engines on the GS, GS Adventure and RT, torque has actually been increased slightly at low revs. The exhaust gases are routed through a 2-in-1 exhaust system with a rear silencer that is steeply angled for dynamic effect. A modified airbox, newly shaped air intake snorkels and a centrally positioned radiator all lend themselves to a slender, sporty and dynamic-looking front silhouette.

ABS, ASC and two riding modes as standard. Riding mode Pro with Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) as an optional extra.

For optimum adaptation to the rider’s individual needs, the new R 1200 RS already comes equipped as standard with the two riding modes “Rain” and “Road”. Besides ABS, the standard specification also includes Automatic Stability Control (ASC) for increased handling safety when accelerating. And, with the optional Riding mode Pro feature, the new R 1200 RS also adds Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) with banking detection as well as two extra riding modes – “Dynamic” and “User” – to its technical repertoire.

Tubular steel bridge frame with engine as a self-supporting element. Wheel suspension using upside-down telescopic fork and EVO Paralever.

A new tubular steel bridge frame incorporating the flat-twin engine as a self-supporting element was purpose-developed for the new R 1200 RS. With an upside-down telescopic fork at the front and EVO Paralever at the rear, the wheel suspension adopts the classic chassis technology of dynamic sports tourers, but updated in typical BMW Motorrad fashion. Excellent steering precision, directional accuracy, neutral handling and braking rigidity were all a top priority when configuring the chassis. All while never losing sight of the overriding objective for the new R 1200 RS of creating an exceptionally dynamic RS model for the keen rider, whose design language has been derived from the S 1000 RR superbike.

Latest-generation Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) for ideal riding dynamics in any situation.

Opting for the latest generation of the electronically controlled suspension Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) takes the dynamic riding experience to even greater heights. With its two damping settings, “Road” and “Dynamic”, Dynamic ESA enables the rider to enjoy unprecedented levels of handling safety, performance and comfort, as the damping is automatically adapted to the prevailing riding conditions to suit the riding situation and the manoeuvres being carried out.
Multifunctional instrument cluster with analogue speedometer, on-board computer and a wealth of information.

Even the instrumentation of the new R 1200 RS takes a quantum leap into a new sports touring era. The speed is displayed in traditional fashion by an analogue speedometer, but there is also a TFT display for showing a wide array of information.

Sporty design with dynamic proportions. Two colour and finish variants, each with their own character.

The BMW Motorrad RS models have always enjoyed a reputation for being the perfect all-rounders. The new BMW R 1200 RS fuses these credentials with both sharp performance and a sporty, dynamic design. The aerodynamically styled semi-fairing with twin headlights forms the “face” of the new BMW R 1200 RS and makes the fusion of tourer and sports machine plain to see. The dynamic proportions, with the low-set front and the delicately styled tail jutting up at the rear, give the bike a slight wedge shape and leave no doubt as to its sporting prowess, along with its many other talents. Two colour and finish variants each underline the powerful character of the new R 1200 RS, but in their own individual way. This results in a choice of two different styling variants: the classically sporty basic colours Lupin blue metallic / Light grey metallic and the sporty and exclusive “Style 2” variant in Granite grey metallic matt.

Highlights of the new BMW R 1200 RS:
  • Classic flat-twin boxer engine with 92 kW (125 hp) at 7,750 rpm and 125 Nm (92 lb‑ft) at 6,500 rpm.
  • Sporty and dynamic sports tourer design.
  • Aerodynamically styled semi-fairing with adjustable windshield.
  • Torsionally rigid tubular steel bridge frame with engine as self-supporting element.

The new BMW R 1200 R.

The new BMW R 1200 R – the boxer roadster for the keen rider.

BMW Motorrad and the roadster with the flat-twin boxer engine – it’s a partnership that has kept enthusiasts enthralled ever since the arrival of the R 32 some 91 years ago, during which time the roadster has come to symbolise the ultimate in unadulterated motorcycling pleasure. And especially so when the propulsive power stems from the classic boxer engine with its inimitable character and glorious sound. From cruising along serenely, to powering down country roads, to touring with a passenger and luggage, the boxer-engined roadster models from BMW Motorrad have always made for the ideal partner. The new R 1200 R upholds this tradition of comfort, dynamism and touring capability, at the same time as putting a new slant on the alluring blend.

Meatier and mightier boxer engine for dynamic riding pleasure.

The flat-twin boxer engine on the new R 1200 R is the same DOHC drive unit that already powers the R 1200 GS and R 1200 GS Adventure as well as the R 1200 RT and the new R 1200 RS. It produces 92 kW (125 hp) at 7,750 rpm and develops its peak torque of 125 Nm (92 lb‑ft) at 6,500 rpm. Compared to the engine on its predecessor, not only has torque been increased substantially throughout the rev range, but delivery is now more uniform too. The exhaust gases are routed through a 2-in-1 exhaust system with a dynamic-looking, steeply angled rear silencer. A modified airbox and newly shaped air intake snorkels, as well as a centrally positioned radiator, all lend themselves to the slender front silhouette to which all roadsters aspire.

ABS, ASC and two riding modes as standard. Riding mode Pro with Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) as an optional extra.

For optimum adaptation to the rider’s individual needs, the new R 1200 R already comes equipped as standard with the two riding modes “Rain” and “Road”. Besides ABS, the standard specification also includes Automatic Stability Control (ASC) for increased handling safety when accelerating. And when specified with the optional Riding mode Pro feature, the new R 1200 R also adds Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) with banking detection as well as two extra riding modes – “Dynamic” and “User” – to its technical repertoire.

Tubular steel bridge frame with the engine as a self-supporting element. Wheel suspension using upside-down telescopic fork and EVO Paralever.

A new tubular steel bridge frame incorporating the flat-twin engine as a self-supporting element was purpose-developed for the new R 1200 R. With an upside-down telescopic fork at the front and EVO Paralever at the rear, the wheel suspension remains true to classical roadster principles that have been updated in typical BMW Motorrad fashion. Excellent steering precision, directional accuracy, handling and braking rigidity were all top priorities when configuring the chassis – and all while never losing sight of the overriding objective for the new R 1200 R of creating an exceptionally dynamic roadster for the keen rider, whose design language is derived from the S 1000 RR superbike.

Dynamic proportions for a pared-down roadster look. Three colour and finish variants, each with their own character.

The BMW Motorrad boxer roadsters have always enjoyed a reputation for being the perfect companions for everyday use. The new BMW R 1200 R fuses these all-round credentials with both significantly sharper performance and a contemporary, pared-down roadster look. The dynamic proportions, with the low-set front and the light, almost delicate-looking tail jutting up at the rear, give the bike a slight wedge shape and leave no doubt as to its sporting prowess, along with its many other talents. Three colour and finish variants each underline the powerful character of the new R 1200 R, but in their own individual way. This results in a choice of three decidedly different styling variants: the basic colour in Cordoba blue non-metallic, the “Style 1” variant in Light white non-metallic with frame in Racing red, and the “Style 2” variant in Thunder grey metallic with frame in Agate grey metallic matt.

Highlights of the new BMW R 1200 R:
  • Classic flat-twin boxer engine with 92 kW (125 hp) at 7,750 rpm and 125 Nm (92 lb‑ft) at 6,500 rpm.
  • Dynamic-looking, compelling roadster design.
  • Torsionally rigid tubular steel bridge frame with engine as self-supporting element.

  • New intake air duct and central radiator for ultra-compact front silhouette.
  • Upright seating position with front bias for a dynamic riding sensation combined with excellent seating comfort for longer tours.
  • Restyled exhaust system in pentagonal design.
