BMW Motorrad party in 2014

Excellent weather and a superb atmosphere at the biggest BMW Motorrad party in 2014. What you missed if you stayed at home.

Anyone who has been to the BMW Motorrad Days at least once is familiar with the basic atmosphere: by day there is a great celebration of motorcycling and at night people on the same wavelength simply celebrate life itself - and both parts are as relaxed and open-minded as is typical of the very best motorcycle parties. This year there were once again some 40,000 two-wheel fans present in Garmisch - the same figure as for the record year 2013. There was simply something to suit every mood and every kind of motorcycle culture. Those with a rockabilly hairstyle went to see the rock 'n' roll bands playing at the Motodrom in the evening. Those in search of party music found it in the beer tent. Those who prefer things to be simple went to see Byron play his guitar by the camp fire.

The trend towards motorcycling as a lifestyle - already clearly in evidence at Hausberg last year - was even more pronounced this time round, with Ace Café, Motodrom and some great BMW conversions reflecting a richly varied motorcycle culture. And in spite of the fact that the show rate at the Motodrom was increased to one every half hour, the shows were full every time.

Old school

"You see there's a growing awareness of this kind of authentic phenomenon", said Motodrom operator Donald Ganslmeier. "At some point the television gets boring: here spectators can watch at close quarters and see something truly spectacular. I hope we'll be able to come again next year."

Mark Wilsmore of Ace Café London would like to come back in 2015, too: "The ride from Glemseck to Garmisch was fantastic: excellent roads, perfect weather. I made sure I brought by rain things with me from London, but I never used them. I hope things work out this way next year: it was a great excuse to have fun."

New high tech

Mark rode a BMW R nineT on the run from Glemseck - a bike which suited him to a tee both visually and in terms of riding. Guests were able to test ride the nineT as well as all the other current BMW models, but for those who missed out due to the huge interest there was a high-tech solution - the nineT simulator: Oculus Rift VR goggles, headphones, a ventilator and a BMW R nineT to sit on provided such a realistic ride in a 3D film that the user would sometimes hang out into the arms of the onlookers. "This would be great for virtual test rides at dealerships during the winter," said a BMW helper at the simulator. Or to put it in the words of an 11-year-old test rider: "Again!"

The BMW Concept Roadster was featured on the first floor of the BMW Motorrad exhibition - a show bike that is designed to point the way forward to future BMW roadsters. "It's a very reduced bike with the masses centred above the front section - just as a roadster should be," said Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design at BMW Motorrad. "You couldn't actually get this machine approved for road registration, but it's not all fantasy. Certain details may well turn up in future serial production motorcycles."

Meet and greet

It's worth keeping your eyes open at the BMW Motorrad Days because there are always a number of special guests who make the trip out to Hausberg. This year's celebrities included:

Michael Dunlop, who secured three victories this year at the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy on this BMW S 1000 RR - in the Superbike and Superstock classes and in the Senior TT.

Valerie Thompson, America's fastest woman who recently set a straight-line speed record on her BMW S 1000 RR - and loved the winding rounds around Garmisch.

Katrin Matsushita, world champion in table football, who was happy to challenge table football hopefuls in the Football Tent.

Troy Corser, two-times superbike world champion, pole position record-holder, BMW Motorrad brand ambassador and development rider involved in the success of the BMW S 1000 RR
Roland Sands, designer, who brought along a converted BMW R nineT - the superb BMW Concept Ninety was there again, too.

Jolandie Rust, adventurer, author, long-distance cyclist and motorcyclist, who rode around the entire continent of Africa on her own on a BMW F 650 GS Dakar – covering a total of 45,000 kilometres!
Ryan Pyle, multiple award-winning photographer, TV presenter, film-maker and author, who rode through China with his brother on two BMW F 800 GS, covering a distance of 18,000 km.

Alena Gerber, model, presenter and motorcyclist, who demonstrated in the Event Arena that there are more alternatives to black than you might assume when it comes to motorcycle clothing.

Makani Terror, piercer, model, living tattoo art canvas, who presented popular merchandising articles on her own body.

René Changuion, brand ambassador for BMW South Africa, who lives out the connection between motorcycling and Christianity.

Hannes Jaenicke, actor, who comes to Garmisch every year even though he lives in the USA. He offered a tour for women only.

Over 80 exhibitors demonstrated impressively how diverse the BMW universe actually is.

40,000 motorcycle fans, pillion passengers, riders, master mechanics - and wannabes. It wouldn't have been possible without you. You are the party.

Keyless Ride new for R 1200 GS / GS Adventure, R 1200 RT and
K 1600 GT / GTL for maximum user-friendliness.

For the first time, the BMW Motorrad Keyless Ride System now optionally replaces the conventional ignition lock in the R 1200 GS / GS Adventure, the R 1200 RT and the K 1600 GT / GTL. This means that it is no longer necessary to use a regular key. Unlocking and locking of the steering lock, ignition, fuel filler flap and storage compartments (R 1200 RT and K 1600 GT / GTL) is carried out using a transponder integrated in the key. The key can therefore remain in the rider's clothes, for example.

As soon as the key is located within the vehicle reception area (distance < 2 metres), the steering lock can be briefly unlocked after successful authentication by briefly pressing the button. The steering lock is locked by keeping the button pressed down and placing the handlebars in end position. The ignition is activated by briefly pressing the button or keeping the button pressed down after releasing the steering lock. The ignition is switched off by means of a short or long press of the button. To open the fuel tank, the lever of the fuel filler flap is simply raised. The fuel filler flap can be opened when the motorcycle has been electrically unlocked. The fuel tank is closed by simply pressing the fuel filler flap shut. The alarm system (DWA) is automatically activated when the ignition is switched off and the steering lock is closed, as soon as the key leaves the reception area. However, the alarm system can also be activated manually.

Shift Assistant Pro for gear shifts virtually without torque interrupt as a new special equipment feature for the R 1200 GS / GS Adventure.

The Shift Assistant Pro enables the rider to shift up and down without activating the clutch or throttle valve in the relevant load and engine speed ranges, giving the rider additional comfort as well as increased dynamic performance. Most shifts can be carried out using the shift assistant; one exception here is setting off, for example.

When accelerating, the throttle valve no longer has to be closed for shifts, so propulsion power is virtually constant without torque interrupt. When decelerating and shifting down (throttle valve closed), the engine speed is automatically adapted by means of double-declutching. Gears are engaged as usual by means of the gear pedal. Shift time is significantly reduced as compared to a gearshift using the clutch. However, the Shift Assistant Pro is not an automatic transmission, it simply provides gear shift support. When the Shift Assistant Pro is used for gear shifts, the cruise control is deactivated for safety reasons.

Garmisch

Gentlemen...Queen of Speed Valerie Thompson is making a return to Garmisch, Mattie Griffin is to substitute for the injured Chris Pfeiffer, and the ladies and gentlemen of the Ace Cafe are travelling in convoy from Glemseck to Garmisch to attend the 14th BMW Motorrad Days event.

The biggest motorcycle party of the year awaits in Garmisch-Partenkirchen this coming weekend from 4 to 6 July. BMW Motorrad is hosting a free warm-up on Thursday 3 July at the BMW Museum. Important points for the few days in the run-up to this year’s event:
...start your engines.

Inevitably, because of the great Alpen Roads around the mountain resort, the resounding answer to the question “How do I get to Garmisch” for most visitors is “By motorbike”. However, the choice of travelling companion is still to be made and anyone travelling from or through Stuttgart and its environs can join the second BMD run organised by the Ace Cafe London from Glemseck to Garmisch.

The group is meeting on Friday morning at the Glemseck. Departure is scheduled for 9 a.m. preceded by an optional break with fellow riders. As was also the case last year, the ride is to be led by Mark “Ace Face” Wilsmore, who runs the Ace Cafe in London. This time he will be riding a BMW R nineT. He will be ably supported by Germany’s ace standard-bearer, Hans-Peter Rütten on his red twin cylinder boxer. “We had so much fun on our Ace Cafe-Run at the BMW Motorrad Days last year that we simply had to do it again,” says Hans-Peter. “Just like last year, it doesn’t matter what kind of bike you ride – what matters is taking part.” BMW Motorrad will be on hand to share out free “BMD Run 2014” T-shirts as long as stocks last. For a map of the route and further details see: www.acecafelondon.de

The Wild Irish

Regular BMW Motorrad Days entertainer Chris Pfeiffer has sustained a motocross injury and therefore, for the first time ever, he will be unable to perform his mad-cap wheelies in Garmisch. However, he has found a worthy substitute in Irishman Mattie Griffin, who will use his BMW F 800 R to demonstrate why his friend Chris Pfeiffer has entrusted the entertainment duties to him.

“It’s a pity that Chris can’t perform at the BMW Motorrad Days,” says Mattie, “but his injuries are taking longer to heal than originally expected. Chris knows better than most that you’ve got to be 100 percent fit in order to perform stunts like this. He calls me regularly to tell me what to expect in Garmisch.” Mattie has wanted to visit Garmisch for some time and in 2014 “a dream is coming true” for him. You can see a preview of his tricks at: www.mgstuntriding.com Mattie will also perform at a warm-up show on Thursday in Munich.

The Queen of Speed

The fastest woman in America, Valerie Thompson, is returning to Garmisch once again this year because she enjoyed last year’s event so much: “I’m really looking forward to coming back again because a had a wonderful time last year. Everyone was so hospitable and inviting that I felt right at home. The landscape is very different from anything I had ever seen before and the country roads are just fabulous.”

Valerie comes from Arizona, an area of long, straight roads. Maybe that’s why she was attracted to the Drag Strip, where she recently set a new record in the Modified Class at the Ohio Mile on a BMW S 1000 RR, reaching a speed of over 333 km/h. She adds: “We’re sure that this motorcycle will break another few records this year.” There is just one thing shoe-fan Valerie is not so sure of: “I own 20 pairs of dancing shoes. My most difficult decision will be choosing the ideal pair for the best party in Germany!” You can discuss shoes and record-breaking motorcycles with Valerie in Munich on Thursday and then for the whole weekend in Garmisch.

A Taste for Adventure

In September for the fourth time, we will see the best GS riders of the world on the international GS Trophy in Canada. However, prior to this, they can test their prowess in preparation for this friendly competition on their own GS bike in Garmisch, as a Taster Trophy event is to be held. In the Event Area and in the Enduro Park, the brave riders will compete in teams in front of the crowd, performing tasks involving navigation, roadbook operation, technical understanding and, of course riding challenges. The randomly selected three-man teams will also have to prove that they can work together effectively.

GS fans should not miss this high-powered event, particularly the final, to be held on Saturday between 4.30 and 5:30 pm. As well as the applause of the spectators, the winners will also each receive a BMW Enduro helmet.

King of the Mountain Course

In the context of the “90 Years of Championships and Titles” in the Classic Tent, we should congratulate Michael Dunlop for his hat trick: at this year’s Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man he not only won the second Supersport race, but also, most importantly, the Superbike race, the Superstock race and the Senior TT, all three on a BMW S 1000 RR. “Beforehand, many people asked whether it was possible to win the TT on the BMW. I think I have answered that question clearly enough,” said Michael, speaking to the IOM local racing paper “TT News”. Michael will appear at the BMW Motorrad tent on Saturday afternoon, when he will accept congratulations and explain his choice of line over the Ballaugh Bridge.

The Backroom Boys

The BMW Motorrad Days event is not like the weather - it doesn’t just happen. A team of dedicated people work to ensure that this party runs smoothly. “I am speaking for the entire Motorrad Days organisational team when I say that we are looking forward to seeing the greater biking community in Garmisch again very soon,” says Svenia Ohlsen, project manager for BMW Motorrad Days.

Svenia continues: “A team with more than 30 members has been working for many months to make the Motorrad Days 2014 a real highlight and there will be over 250 helpers at local level to make our plans a reality. I can promise our fans that this year's event will be another weekend full of music, great shows and, of course, thousands of motorbikes and riders. To those who have never been to BMW Motorrad Days before I would say – whatever kind of bike you ride, Garmisch is a really worthwhile experience. Every year, the BMW Motorrad Days are a uniquely different experience.”
