BMW Motorrad MCN Awards
BMW Motorrad takes three prestigious MCN Awards including Manufacturer of the Year.
BMW S 1000 RR takes Sportsbike over 601cc and K 1600 GT wins Tourer of the Year.
BMW Motorrad has been named Motorcycle News’ Manufacturer of the Year for 2011. In addition, the K 1600 GT was awarded Tourer of the Year and the S 1000 RR, which took two awards in 2010, was named Best Sportsbike over 601cc.
Judged and presented by Motorcycle News, the UK’s biggest-selling motorcycle publication, the annual MCN Awards recognise technical innovations, outstanding motorcycles and sales success within the industry.
BMW Motorrad took the prestigious Manufacturer of the Year Award, with the judges saying: “As one of a handful of firms to show real growth in a major downturn, BMW is obviously doing something right. Perhaps it’s the way the firm continues to innovate and advance motorcycling itself by setting new standards of technology and design.”
The new six-cylinder K 1600 GT was named MCN’s Tourer of the Year, which BMW Motorrad also won in 2010 with the R 1200 RT. MCN said: “The only real question was ‘K 1600 GT or K 1600 GTL?’ The GT stole the prize for its sharper handling and lighter weight. The engine is silken and strong, the range is good and comfort is exceptional. It looks good, with loads of presence, and comes with every electronic aid you could wish for, many as standard.”
In addition, the S 1000 RR was named Best Sportsbike over 601cc. The judges said: “Others have tried to meet the S 1000 RR’s standards but they’ve only closed in without nudging ahead. The engine is epic and the overall performance unbeatable.” In 2010, the S 1000 RR was crowned MCN’s Machine of the Year and Best Sportsbike over 751cc.
Adrian Roderick, BMW Motorrad General Manager, said: “It’s a real honour to be named Manufacturer of the Year and to have Motorcycle News’ panel of judges recognise the pioneering work of BMW Motorrad. With motorcycles like the K 1600 GT and S 1000 RR we are pushing the boundaries of safety, innovation and performance for riders while projects like the Concept e electric scooter and Advanced Safety Concept represent the future for BMW Motorrad.
“And MCN’s Awards are a very welcome confirmation that BMW Motorrad is moving in the right direction. To take a third award for our essentially unchanged S 1000 RR supersports bike reinforces the fact that it’s the best in its class, while having our new K 1600 GT recognised as Tourer of the Year reaffirms BMW’s traditional place at the head of the touring category.”
